How prevalent is bicycle theft?

What do you Michigan veterans think?

I would say it depends on where you live. I have an apartment building that has storage, so I keep my bike in storage in the winter (and in my apartment otherwise). I can easily walk to campus in about 15 minutes, but the bike is easier and faster, so I usually use that.

Bicycle theft is not a huge problem, but it does happens. It depends on the quality of bike, and lock. I have a simple $40 U-Lock and have never had a problem.

If you’re going into music, engineering, art, or architecture, there is a pretty good path for most of the way between the central and north campuses. I have commuted from my apartment to north campus plenty of times, and it is usually faster than: walking to bus stop, waiting for bus, walking from bus to class. However, coming back from north campus, there is a pretty steep hill. It’s not hard, but can be intimidating the first time.

In and around central campus during commute time (usually the first ten minutes of each hour), biking can be slow because there are so many students, but it is still faster than walking.

After having it, I wouldn’t willingly give up my bike.

What path do you take to get from central to north when biking? Do you just go down fuller?

Bicycle theft is rampant. You need a ulock and you need to make sure you are attaching it to both the tire and the frame. I saw bikeless wheels chained to the racks outside my dorm REGULARLY. If you buy the proper sort of lock and are vigilant about locking it up properly my guess is that you will be absolutely fine, the thieves look for the easy steal and there are almost always several idiots who only lock the front tire or use a chain that is easily cut. Don’t be one of those idiots and you should be a-okay.

I wanted a bike really bad during the Fall but as someone living in the dorms I have no idea how I would protect it from damage in the winter, it’s not like there’s anywhere to put it to get it out of the weather. There are kids on bikes everywhere so I am sure there must be a way but I don’t know what it is. My roommate left her bike out all year and in the Spring the chain had rusted through.

I did a little research. They have bike lockers at the medical campus and wolverine tower. ([Bicycles](http://pts.umich.edu/alternative_transportation/bicycles.php#lockers))

I don’t know how much space they have or how much it costs though.
