Can anyone provide me with testimonials on their experience with this organization? I am nervous to send my child without knowing if it is a reputable program and she will be safe.
It is reputable and there is no reason she shouldn’t be safe. A lot of the teachers (at least at the Oxford campus / assume it’s the same at other campuses) are doctoral students.
As with most of the famous-university based programs, the program is not officially associated with the university: they rent classroom and dorm space during the summers and hire grad students who appreciate the top-up to their stipends. US colleges view them as expensive summer camps, so are not impressed when they see ‘summer program at Oxford’ (they know that Oxford itself does not have summer sessions).
On the other hand, if you have a kid who has a for-real interest in a subject that is offered at one of these summer programs, why not? It can be a great adventure. Some of our collegekids used similar programs to taste-test universities where they might ED. Just be clear about what it is, and what it isn’t, and that the cost:benefit is there.
@collegemom3717 one of my favorite Oxford terms - summer = “the long vac”. Got a big laugh when I heard one of the detectives use it in one of the Endeavour episodes this past season.
Absolutely, @HazeGrey! Their very literal use of the word ‘vacation’…
(guess I need to go watch Endeavour now) (for more home-movie settings, Lewis & it’s predecessor Morse are good- it’s the rare college that doesn’t turn up sooner or later- I know Worcester Chapel made an appearance) (my favorite, favorite Lewis dig was when Lewis & Hathaway are asking a (Oxford, of course) Greek expert for help translating something- Hathaway has some of it, but can’t figure out the rest. The expert says to Hathaway ‘Cambridge?’ ‘Yes- how did you know?’ "It explains the gaps’).
