Can someone tell me about Oxford College at Emory. Is it like an extenstion school, like Colmbia - School of General Studies? If you were to continue from Oxford to Emory, what would your diploma say, Emory or Oxford.

Also is Oxford a good college, as in prestige and oppurtunites. Can someone comment on their Computer Science Department and English Department. Also does Oxford support double majors and full ba/bs programs.

Its a satellite campus where you get an associate degree then you transfer into Emory College and get a degree from there. Many don't want to have to miss out on real college life the first two years, also there is a little bit of an "Oxford" stigma when they arrive at Emory itself. Its sort of a back door.

you just spend more time in college and its expensive. Oxford at Emory is for people that cannot get into Emory but still feel they are worthy. Its kind of stupid but a lot of kids from my school go. I would think if you want it that bad, saving money and transferring would be a better option.

oxford college is simply a college within the university. its on a much smaller campus but many say the prefer it over emory's main campus for the smaller class sizes. there are actually many who get accepted into emory but decide to go to oxford.

Honestly I know many Oxford kids and lived at Emory and the only ones who chose Oxford over Emory were scholarship kids. Oxford socially is very limited because 1) a much greater percentage are from Georgia and go home on weekends 2) there are no parties since no one is 21 and 3) its social scene hasn't developed. My brother went there and couldn't take it, he transferred out after a year.

I'm going to introduce a different viewpoint based on my own experience.

I think Oxford is incredibly overpriced for what you get. It's a really small campus with obviously limited class choices since it is two-year. The student quality is no where near as good as that of Emory College.

I don't think it's any better than UGA or Ga. Tech.

I think it depends what you're looking for. If you want small classes and close relations with professors, Oxford may be a better choice than the state schools that you have listed. If you want a large, active campus with access to a city and/or a lot of chances to socialize, then Oxford would be a miserable place.

There is no doubt that the admit stats listed for Oxford are "lower" that those posted for Emory College. It is a way to get into an excellent university through the back door. A rare commodity these days! With college admissions so competive and unforgiving, there are very few back doors still around. Oxford is definitely not for everyone but it does serve a real purpose.

I once saw very interesting internal figures from Emory that showed Oxford students maintained higher GPAs than most "regular" Emory students in junior and senior year. Unfortunately, I no longer have that information at hand. So, admit rates may not tell the full story.
I do, however, know that Oxford students and administrators get quite upset when Oxford is referred to as a back door way into Emory. They see their mission differently: as the two year liberal arts college of Emory.

I think people who don't know Oxford have these overly idealistic impressions. My brother went there and I know about 20 former Oxford students. It is a backdoor for the most part, it is NOT a LAC (and significantly lacks the community/ social structures of one), and it is one of the most atypical college experiences out there.

The stat you cite Carolyn is that Oxford students tend to do better on average than emory students in securing Phi Beta Kappa awards. The primary reason for this is that Oxford has many scholarship kids that do very well.
