Oxford, Cambridge, LSE Decisions Thread

Thanks theGame, frankchn and Begoner! I'll look into that link and see what I come up with :) I figure I'll give applying a shot if I get at least a 98.5 TER/UAI [am from Aus. :)]
How do you do the interviews? Must you go to the campus or can you do it with an alum in your area?

For Singapore, they fly professors/lecturers down from Oxbridge. They may not be teaching your major exactly, but will usually teach something close (I chose Natural Science (Physical) but was interviewed by a Chemistry/ChemE professor).

If that is not possible, a phone interview will be arranged.

^ Well i applied for SPS (PPS - Politics, Psychology and Sociology) but was interviewed by a NatSci professor... Suffice to say all the politics-related questions were very superficial, we just discussed my background and personal stuff like that.

I know for a fact that Singaporean students with high scores in the interview (from 8/10 and up) are automatically pooled.

I was pooled by Trinity, and then given an offer by Magdalene via phone call (about 10 days ago i think). Too bad I declined their offer the day after that because without the scholarship (which only comes with Trinity) I couldn't afford Cambridge sigh I didnt want to wait til the reply deadline because there's still time for them to offer my place to somebody else in the Winter Pool (and save him from the agony he must be going through right now)... I know how it feels drowning in the pool lol

A wee bit sad... but if anything for about one minute it did feel nice being able to reject Cambridge haha

12 people in my school applied to oxbridge.

All were rejected :o

Not exactly very pleasant for me, since I plan on applying next year...

I applaud your decision..how many times do we forget to think of the other guy I don't know, but this is heartening stuff! Well done :)

For the record, as soon as I got my ED acceptance at Gettysburg, I told the other 5 colleges that I had applied to by then to not consider me anymore as I had been admitted in my 1st choice college. Most asked my college's name, but almost all congratulated me and were happy to have a person off the applicant pool ;)

Hey guys: did u guys do the Thinking Skill Assessment thing?
it seems to be really hard.. how do u prepare for that??

i just took the practice test the night before taking the test and i think i did pretty sweet on the actual one...

btw, i just received my LSE offer for straight econ..

^ Congratulations! May I know your stats? I was expecting an unconditional for BSc Econ but got the boot last week. Ouch! It still hurts.

i dunno if German stats help yout hat much :d
but i had a predicted 1,0 (which is the perfect score), I wasnt required to submit any SATs, my recommendation was pretty strong and i have been majoring maths and physics and 7 other subjects as minors

its conditional, i have to get a 1,2 (which should be alright), and get a 14/15 points overall in maths (that should be alright as well)...

Does working for the SAT put you in the right mindset for working for the TSA? Are they in any way similar?

there are some questions which might be similiar, but in general its quite different (at least that is what i thought...)

I got rejected from Cambridge. :/

I'm predicted a 43 in the IB, with 777 in HL, and 776 in SL.

I am not actually disappointed, as I would have turned down their offer due to finance issues, and the fact that I like Edinburgh better.

TSA is completely different from the SAT IMHO. The questions are shorter but require higher order thinking. I feel it's more about intelligence, whereas the SAT is more about aptitude for higher education, if that makes sense. There are practice tests online, just do a simple google search. However if you're applying for social science courses the test will be slightly different, for all the math and science questions will be removed.

TSA is to cut off the bottom 25% of applicants to Oxbridge, so i was told. If you do well for SAT (2100 and up) you'll most definitely pass the TSA (hence belong to the upper 75%). I dont think they release TSA scores, but if you're the highest scorer in the world you receive some kind of recognition.

@TheGame: Thank you for your kind words :)

Haha, I remember my cousin was either the highest or 3rd highest candidate in the oxbridge exam about 15 years ago. He got 4 As in his A levels, which was above the requirement, but he was rejected. Apparently his interview wasn't so good (he had a bit of an issue with the interviewer). Moral of the story - suck up to the interviewer, or at least never disagree or show some sort of stinginess.

Thanks for the response confused_vnese!

Apparently Christ's college doesn't have any entrance examination, so does this mean they place extra weight on the interview, or maybe that they ask harder questions? Also, it is listed under their college that you have the option of sending in written work? What written work are they referring to? Perhaps an essay or research paper?

Oops, double post, sorry.

^^ Yes indeed it's listed that way, but what colleges eventually ask you to do is another matter.
My intended college also states on the Cam website that it doesnt require TSA test (one of the main reasons why i applied there actually. didnt want to go through the whole excruciating test-taking and test-prep processes amidst A levels). Instead, you have to send in written work, which means anything you've written as part of your curriculum and has been graded in the past two years. In the end, I must both take the TSA and send in my work /:

You have to photocopy your papers, get teacher's written confirmation about the nature of your work and your grade, and send it off. They specifically asked for "brief, analytical essays" so personally i wouldn't send in research paper. I didn't. I sent in two short essays written for timed exams. Timed exams are preferred actually.

Actually the interview is less about agreeing with the interviewer, and more about showing that you have an opinion which you know how to defend effectively. But true, some interviewers can be put off if we disagree with them on everything....

I got into the University of Edinburgh, which is my top choice...

Anyone else applied there?

yes. lots of my friends applied there. one did psychology and got an offer of 34 points for IB

Why isn't Imperial in the list?????

because imperial ain't all that
