Oxford College

I am a Boston College freshman and am thinking of transfering to Emory or Oxford of Emory. Anyways, I have heard many things about Oxford as to being the birthplace of Emory etc, so I was wondering if it is true that people gain beter experience as Emory-men by going through Oxford first.

Some concerns about the place:

ACADEMICS

First of all, is it true that classes at Oxford are harder than those at Emory? Second, do students at Oxford have the same chances of geting in the undergrad B-school as do folks from Emory College? Does the Emory, BA diploma of folks who have attended Oxford differ from the one students who went to Emory College all the way hold?

S. Life

How is social life at Oxford, and how far is it from the city? I am originally from NYC and am kind of used to big cities so I wouldn't really like to be isolated in a "no witch no candle place", if you know what I mean. Finally, how do you guys from Emory see Oxford students?

Oxford, i've heard is a lot harder than Emory and in the past the top of the Emory class often originates from Oxford Emory. Oxford Emory, litterally is the size of about 2 football fields, very very small. But it is only about 15-20 mins from Emory and about 30 mins from Atlanta. Let me tell you honestly that Oxford Emory is for people who just barely couldn't get into Emory but still want to attend, unless of course you recieve Oxford Scholar. If you recieve Oxford Scholar you get a free ride throuh your 2 years in Oxford as well as your 2 years in Emory. Some people choose to attend Oxford because it is 10,000$ cheaper (20,000 total) than Emory. The social life isn't anywhere as good as Emory's and most kids just take the bus to Emory or Atl on the weekends. If you have a choice between Emory and Oxford...go with Emory (unless you get Oxford Scholar or you want to save the 10,000). This is all coming from sources and people who are/have attended/ing Oxford Emory. If you dont get into Emory but get into Oxford Emory (which i am sure you will since you go to BC) i recommend you stay at BC. Oxford also has a grade deflation. I'm not sure about the Diploma because i have heard differing stories but maybe someone else can answer that. If you dont get into Emory, and you really really really want to go there then consider Oxford Emory. I dont think it makes a diff. for grad school whether you go to Oxford Emory first or Emory.

nyhunter, I don't think that Oxford would be a bad idea, but as harry said, social life isn't much of a deal there. Even though Oxford and Emory are ranked higher than BC, I would never even compare Boston with GA in terms of spenting my college years. I mean, wow, Boston, you have all those colleges and universities like Harvard, MIT, Emerson, Northeastern and BU, it's the academic capital of America embraced by all those bright minds, how come you decided to leave?

Academic wise, both Oxford and Emory offer courses of the exact same caliber. I have even heard that students who go there tend to find classes easier when they attend Emory College and students from both colleges have equal chances of attending B-school. Oxford is a little more traditional, has more of an Ivy-like environment with all those old buildings and memorials. Concerning the diploma, I wouldn't worry about it, I don't thing that your Oxford attendance would be displayed on it, and even if it did, it wouldn't matter, Oxford is very well respected.

im interested in this: what do people from Emory think of people who transfer from Oxford Emory?

that they are incredible geniuses;)

I used to go Ox. but I transfered to Duke before going to Emory coll. At the time, 7 kids from em. coll. applied to duke and one (me) from Ox. They chose me and one of those 7.

Who's the genius now sm@rt@$$;)

hahaha so basically you're saying they are looked down upon?

I didn't mean it that way. It was a joke. I personally hang out with people from Oxford and they are seen as regular emory students. There is no looking down.

Dukedem0n, congrads on your duke conquest. How is Duke? Harder than Emory?

hahah okay i was thinking of Oxford as my 2nd choice if i dont get into emory..but the last thing i wanted was to be treated like a second class citizen :(lol

Duke is like an Ivy league, large gothic buildings etc. As far as academics are concerned, it's not much harder than Oxford, I guess a little harder than Emory College. By the way, I really enjoyed my time at Ox before moving out, I consider it a lot more traditional and Ivy'sh than emory coll. The downside is the distance from the city.

what was your GPA when you graduated from Oxford Emory? Did you do any EC's that helped you get into Duke transfer?

3.9 and a lot of EC's.

any specific EC's that set you apart? just wanna see what i gotta do :)

I really apreciate the comments guys. I will deeply consider the pros and cons of Oxford College and Emory, plus they are not the only places I will be applying so even if I don't go there, it's not the end of the world.

Dukedem0n, I am also applying to Duke so would you mind giving me some advice?
