Oxford Colleges

Okay, thank you for your help.

Don't worry too much about it; what's done is done. You can get in without applying open!

Out of curiosity, what attracted you guys to New & Balliol? I think I'm leaning towards Corpus Christi at the moment; I like the idea of being a member of the smallest college at Oxford, and their Alternate Prospectus was entertaining (like most of them are, I suppose). I've still got a while to choose, though.

Good luck getting in!

I really wouldn't worry. College choice is unlikely to affect whether you get in and even less likely if you are been interviewed abroad since you will not be interviewed by someone from your chosen college anyway. Like I said, I'm not at my first choice college (which was Balliol) but I am happy and it didn't seem to make any difference.

I actually applied to Balliol because it is centrally located, it is big, it has a lot of undergrads, and it is the college that accepts the most PPE students. There is a table on the Oxford website that has the number of undergrads accepted per college and that is where I looked.

I was wondering what you are studying at Oxford? How you like it? And how your interview was?

I was attracted to New for several reasons. It is well respected academically, large, and centrally located. I had a hard time choosing a college. I had about six I wanted to apply to. But in the end, it really became a toss-up between New and Worcester and I chose New because it is larger. Also, my dad went to Oxford for grad school and he certainly had a number of opinions about colleges.

Me? PhD in Biology. I didn't have an undergrad interview here, since I went to Cambridge. (I think I am institutionalised!) My interview here was with my PhD supervsior and the head of my department. My supervisor does undergraduate interviews for his college are they aren't a lot different. They are very much like the tutorials you will have when you are actually enrolled as an undergraduate. I guess part of the interview process if to try and determine how well you would do in the tutorial system. You need to be quite an independent learner I think, for UK schools in general, not just Oxbridge.

I wouldn't have been here (in England) for 7 years if I didn't like it, but I did do UK A-levels, which made the application process easier for me.

Oxford interviews can be quite intense but there should be some websites or forums that give you a strong idea of what they are like. I know that US college interviews tend to be a bit more laid back then them.

And I disagree, I think your college choice DOES affect your chance of enrollment. yes, sometimes you will be pooled and another college will pick you up and that this is fairly common. But I also know people are often encouraged to apply to colleges that they stand a chance of getting in or a specific major that is undersubscribed. This is fairly common in UK schools.

I will be applying for PPE as well for Oxford in 2007. Applications are due in Oct 15, way earlier than most. I do the IBs so I will be sending my predicted IB scores and my application forms before that deadline. You might have to do an interview depending on your location and afterwards a special Oxford test.

hi. i was wondering how all of your interviews went?? i had mine last month and it was okay i think. i also have a telephone interview in the next two weeks and was wondering if anyone else does, or has any idea of what i should expecT? any feedback would be really appreciated

one last quick thing...I'm a Junior, and so far I've got...
AP German - 5
AP US Gov't - 4

This year I'm taking AP US History, AP Comparative Government, and AP Biology. If I get 5s on these, can I just submit those AP tests which I've already taken and go for unconditional acceptance? Or would it be best to wait and try to get conditional with my senior year APs as well (AP European History, AP Physics, AP AB Calc, AP English, & AP Econ)?

I really think that it's your choice as to whether or not to submit senior year APs. I did, but that was because I only four APs thus far, so it really strengthened my application.

On a seperate note, I had my interview already. It was alright, I guess. I don't really know what to think. I haven't had a call for a followup interview by phone, so maybe I should be worried.

ha i dont think you should be worried.... i think i should be worried!

Kerouac - Perhaps they think you're so good they don't need to give you a second interview and have already accepted you? Look on the bright side :)

I hope/wish!

HI!
To join your conversation... I applied to Oxford this fall and had my interview in NY in October. I actually liked it! I was sooo nervous b4, because I heard horror stories about how they ask you things like "what percentage of the earth's water is contained in a cow?" and other insane things like that. But it went fine! It was academic and I didn't know a couple of the answers... but overall it wasn't worth all that nervousness. :)

So... today I get a letter from St. Peter's (the college my open app was allocated to) and it says that they understand that non-EU applicants are not expected to go through an interview with one of their tutors. Is that just a standard letter they send to all the internationals? Or should I e-mail them to make sure they know I've been interviewed?

Also, cupcake - can you describe St. Peter's for me? Because I really couldn't find much useful info on its website except that it's located in the center. Like, is it pretty, is it loud, and WHY does it not have a virtual tour??? =)

check the Norrington table, it ranks all of the oxford colleges. I applied to Merton.

Erm no, I've never been in this college. New Inn Hall st has lots of student accommodation and runs parallel to the main shopping street Cornmarket. Almost opposite the front door is an entrance to an indoor shopping mall called the claredon centre. There are a few smaller shops in New inn Hall st itself (Argos, 2 shoes shops, a bank, 2 sandwich/coffee shops) and it meets Queen st which has lots of bus stops along it and many more shops. It depends which building you live in how noisey it will be. If your room is at the back of the college probably it will be quieter. I don't think it will be super-loud anyway.

If you go to www.streetmap.co.uk and enter OX1 2DL as the postcord, you will get a map with an arrow marking the location of this college.

nelle ...i had my interview in ny also .. just wondering where you are applying from and what program you applied to? its strange that you got a letter saying that since you had your interview ...i got a letter asking for a telephone interview which is weird also since i had an interview in nyc... im not sure what we should do. it kind of seems like they didnt acknowledge we had interviews in ny
