Does anyone still use this? I've been reading several essays and I have yet to see someone use it. It really bugs me, and I always get lost on the sentence. Is this not a common practice anymore? I always feel weird if I should note it or not.

I haven’t come across it lately.

I was actually wondering the same thing, since I use it in all my writing and have been writing college essays for the past week or so. Does anybody think college admissions will look down on its use? I personally find it adds more clarity to what I’m writing.

It’s a perfectly legitimate style. As long as you are consistent, no one will notice. Chicago Manual of Style calls for it. AP doesn’t. Those are the guides I know. Just follow a style consistently and no one will give your “a, b, and c” a second thought.
