oxford housing

i just got my housing contract, and im in oxford, anyone know anything about it? is it a party dorm? is it a bad dorm? good dorm? thanks everyone........

Its on central campus..but a really far walk (there's a bus though), and it doesn't have a cafeteria, so that'd be annoying. I don't know anything about if it's a party dorm though, but I know a lot of people there find it very inconvienent.

My son just got his contract too - also for Oxford - I just spoke with the LSA Honors housing liason, and he seemed to think that other than the slight distance factor and the no cafeteria thing, that it was a good situation - not a party dorm and not as isolated at Bursley. But I would be curious to hear what students familiar with the campus have to say.

Basically its isolated from all the other dorms and central campus in a way (its kind of a far walk, esp. in the cold/snow!) So its kind of like its own bubble.

Kitkat--your S is in honors and did'nt get South Quad? That's too bad; I thought they promised that.

Anyhoo, back in the dark ages I lived for two years (jr and sr) in Oxford, as a transfer, because it was that or Baits in North Campus. It wasn't bad for me, the walk to campus was like ten minutes. There were a few frosh there; they seemed fine. BAck then it was a work co-op to save money (we did all the cooking and cleaning for reduced housing rates) but I think that's not the case now.

the pictures on the housing website looks like they're from the 70's.

Do all transfer students who transfer into a new year (as opposed to transfering into winter semester) put into Oxford automatically or does a transfer student still have the ability to live in Central/Hill dorms if he/she chooses?

Transfer students are low on the housing priority totem pole (generally it's returning students->freshmen->transfers). Because of the distance/isolation factor, it's generally not considered desirable, which is why it most transfer students would get assigned there.

oh, but its not like transfer students who transfer in their sophmore year would still have low housing priority for junior year right?

Oxford used to be used primarily for transfers but a few years ago they started putting freshmen there out of a need for space.

There was some concern that it's a crappier place to live because of the distance and no food. They added bus service to help with the former. I've since heard that some students like living there, that they've haven't felt as marginalized as people feared. I haven't heard firsthand from any residents, however.
