oxford housing?

so whats it like? i know its like 350 people and i hear its kinda far away from other places. what are peoples opinions of it? etc etc. general thoughts?

Bump. I got Oxford too.

I got Oxford too. I’m actually really excited and have heard only great things from people who lived there last year. UMich is already going to be huge, so I think a smaller dorm is a good thing. It’s also on the Hill, which is supposedly awesome!

I usually don’t post but I figured I’d post on this…

Oxford is what you make of it. I have friends that say they loved it and others that say they hated it. I was thinking of living there this year as a sophomore, but I don’t think I’d want to do it as a freshman.

They do have a cafeteria but I guess a lot of the students still walk to MoJo for most meals, anyway. I believe most of the rooms have kitchens unless you get a double. It’s not really close to anything other than some of the frats and sororities that are down that way (Fiji, Alpha Phi, etc.).

To get to class you’re going to have to take the Link. Apparently it’s not the most reliable, and will run up to 20 minutes late at times. I suppose you could always walk to CC Little and grab a bus there but it’s still a pretty good walk to do that.

I have never been in one of the rooms but I hear they are a lot bigger than most of the rooms that freshman get. I know they’re definitely a lot bigger than Markley.

Anybody know about the quads? Look like big rooms.

hey, i got oxford too.,

what’s the link.
and how far is it from CC.

i’m not trying to be 20 min late to every class…

Oxford is about 10-15 minutes walking from CC depending on the weather…and how long your legs are. You can always wait for the oxford shuttle to take you to CC, although that’s a bit hard to time correctly and can be crowded.

how’s the social scene at oxford? is it good for meeting people? good for partying? etc etc.

and another question about busing/traveling: how long does it take to get to north campus? im in engineering so i may need to take a course or two up there. i hear the busing at oxford is late but i wasnt sure if thats only to CC or in general

thanks

Not sure about the social scene at Oxford, but since it’s so small I’m guessing there isn’t really one. If you like to party, go down Washtenaw on Fridays where all the frat houses have their parties. Or you can do the bar scene on South U. If you like clubbing there’s Necto on Liberty.

The bus to engineering comes very promptly and often on weekdays, but you need to be at CC Little where all the action is.

is oxford close to washtenaw/the frats? is oxford like really isolated or a few min walk?

bump please

Hey guys! I’m going to be in an oxford quad next year as a freshman. and I also am in engineering.

to answer some questions:
oxford is right by some frat houses. I know someone in one of them. other frat houses are all arround if you don’t mind walking a mile or less (10 mins probably). parties are never a problem at umich.

alternative to walking everywhere- I’m getting a bike for when it’s not snowing. racks are everywhere to lock up. just get a junker.

I hear since oxford is small it makes a nice little community. with 350 students your age, your bound to find someone you can hang with. other than that I don’t know if oxford has specail activities.

you can smoke a lot of weed up there with a small risk of getting caught.

good to know

my friend’s room there was huge. he shared it with 2 or 3 others (i forgot), but i remember thinking just how big it was. it had its own kitchen area too (i’m pretty sure they didn’t have a cafeteria, though).

if you don’t like walking or riding the bus, you can bike from oxford to central pretty easily. it’s a slight downhill ride until you get to south u, then it is flat.

i’m going to be a sophomore this year, and last year i lived in oxford. i didn’t really have a good idea of how it was before i moved in, so i’ll do my best to make sure you do.

-rooms: compared to other rooms on the hill, they are pretty spacious. depending on what house you live in (i believe there are 7) determines what kind of room you have. some houses have laminate floor with storage built in, some have laminate with full kitchenettes (quad suites), while some have wood floors and others have carpeting. all houses have a lounge/study and maybe a kitchen. East seeley has the rescomp center and community center, goddard has a dining hall, geddes has a “gym”, one has a ping pong table, and vandenberg has NOTHING (no lounge or kitchen, just university employee offices and a washer/dryer). The gym in geddes was just added last year, it has a treadmill, some free weights, a tv, and some other ****ty equipment im pretty sure they picked up off the street.

-transportation:The link comes every 15 minutes, conveniently so that you have time to get to classes. Be warned though, that it has a tendency to get really unpredictable as the day wears on and classes end between 3 &5. There is a stop on hill before oxford and in the morning around 9 or 10 the link can fill to max capacity which leaves students having to walk from oxford to campus if they wish to make their class on time-this usually only happens in the winter. Another thing about the winter is that many students rely on the link during this season, so the chance of not getting on or having to wait extended periods of time for a bus increases. I personally had a bike, and was able to get to central campus in 2 minutes. I preferred to walk on nice mornings/home from class and it takes 10 minutes from oxford to the diag. The walk is nice, you pass Angell Elementary, residents with kids, and shops along South U-perfect for stopping for coffee before an early lecture. As for engineering students, have fun. Leave a lot of time so you can catch the north commuter @ c.c little.

-social scene: I think oxford is great for freshman who want to go out. It is by most frats/sororities, and equal distance to other dorms on the hill and dorms on central campus. On the weekends there is no link service, so you need to walk to the big house for game days(many frats/tailgating along the way), and after 11 p.m there is no link service so you need to be able to walk home from parties etc. In the winter many ppl call cabs to go places, otherwise you’ll be braving the michigan weather. Most halls are boys on bottom floor girls on top (pun intended), and it can be really fun if you MAKE THE EFFORT to get to know the others in your hall. After a while, Oxford really becomes a close-knit community. and yes, it is really easy to smoke weed-especially since the arb is right across the way on geddes.

-FOOD- most important. oxford has a dining hall in goddard, and supposedly we get our food from Markley. The only time food is served is breakfast (very generic) and dinner. No lunch or food on the weekends, but there is the oxford express where you can use dining dollars or blue bucks to buy food/drinks/commodities during certain hours. Most of the time i met friends somewhere for lunch and dinner or walked to mojo with ppl from oxford to eat. there is ice cream now though!

hope this helped a little, enjoy oxford and love your time at Michigan. it truly is awesome.

Some of this stuff is a little outdated so ill help out here. I live in Oxford this year and it is honestly one of the best dorms on campus. It is great for people who want to go out as many of the parties and nightlife are right in the area. As a result I find that many people in Oxford go out. The rooms are also defintely bigger than almost all other dorms.
In terms of location, it is not bad at all. There is a bus that comes right out front of oxford every 10 minutes on weekdays, (untill 8 pm-2am when it comes every 15 minutes) and it takes you right to central campus, and there is a bus app that tells you when the bus is coming.
There is a dining hall called twigs in Goddard that serves 3 meals a day and the food is generally good. Dinner can be hit or miss because it is more limited in terms of options since there is less people in Oxford, but the food is generally of better quality than some of the other dining halls. It is also more of a homey feel to it, its generally quieter and less crowded, and there are TVs and couches too.
There are also study lounges in oxford too and each building has some sort of nice amenity to it, such as a computer lab and a ping pong table and a fitness center.
What really makes oxford different from the rest of the dorms is that you become close with a lot of people in oxford. You make a big school small and you will recognize and become friendly with many people living there, along with your hall. It will be easy to walk into the dining hall alone and find people you know to sit with.
Also, dont listen to anyones opinions on oxford who dont live there, people who dont live in oxford thinks it sucks because they really just don’t know much about it. If you ask almost anyone in oxford what they think of it, theyll tell you they like it.

I lived in Oxford. Dorms can be oversized. Oxford is more homey. Though the architecture isn’t as classic. It’s right near the Arb.

The walk is a bit far in Winter.
