I applied EDII to Emory, and didn't get in. I have a 1360 SAT, and a bad GPA for emory's standards (probably the reason why i didn't get in). Should I attend Oxford? I like the idea of something similar to a LAC-- HOWEVER, I've been hearing things about bad social lives. Isn't it possible to chill out in Emory/Atlanta on the weekends, if you attend Oxford? I mean, what's the big deal? Are people at Oxford really looked down upon when going to the main Emory campus? I'm sure there are tons of bright people attending Oxford, despite the low requirements to get in. I just want to be around bright people, and have fun with people on the weekends- including students on the main Emory campus. I live in NJ, and I REALLY want to be in a warm environment. A part of me loves Oxford, and a part of me wants to rule it out. Please give me some advice! :(

Is there any possible way that you could visit? Oxford is definitely very small (even for a LAC). Some people have posted positive things, and others posted negatives. I think it might be easier to make up your mind if you could see the campus.

One possibility is to ask them to submit your credentials to Oxford. Then, once you've gotten all the cards on the table, you can rule it out or decide to visit.

I've never heard of anyone "looking down" on Oxford students. In fact, I get the feeling that Oxford students hang together by preference after their arrival at Emery.

Your other option would be to go to another college where you do get in, try to make a go of it, and, if things don't work out socially, put in for a transfer to Emery.

Either way, you'll need to work hard to do well.

If you are seriously considering Oxford, do a pros and cons list. You will have a chance to pull your GPA up and are pretty much guaranteed Emory your junior year. You will also have small classes. My husband has a friend whose son is at Oxford - almost done with soph. year - then off to Emory.

Good luck!

Do you know if he likes it? We've had very mixed reports on this before.

Yes, he does like it.

It is my understanding that there are many differences betrween the two campuses. That does not mean one is a better environment than the other.

Some things to consider when comparing the campuses:

Course offerings
Quality of academic environment
Diversity of student body
Are there more local Georgians attending Oxford?
Social offerings and activities

I believe there is a very different social and academic atmosphere at the schools. However, you need to look at all variables and decide if Oxford is a good match for you.

For me, coming from a northeastern city, I do not believe Oxford would be a good fit at all. I would choose one of my other schools that I applied to over Oxford. Actually I would never consider Oxofrd ad an option. On the other hand, Emory is everything I am looking for in a university.

I live close to Oxford and was accepted early decision. I am waiting for reg decision from Emory. The campus is very nice but Covington is not what I would call upscale and very boring. It is only thirty minutes from Emory and Atlanta which is nice. I have friends who go to Oxford that hang out at Emory. Many people I know who go to Oxfod were admitted to emory as well but Oxford gave them hefty scholarships that made it a better deal. So there are very smart people with similar interests there as well. It is a VERY small campus but that means it has great one on one with teachers and a max class size on 30. It is great if you want to get to know people and get to know great teachers. You really need to visit it to get a feel because it is very different from Emory and you could really hate ithere because of its location and size. I chose not to go there for these reasons but others really like it.

I mean, what about social life? why is it such a big deal if it's "boring" when you can simply chill at emory/atlanta? i just need to be in a nice climate and pretty setting, and i know the education is great. the last factor is social life---- so this is what i'm trying to focus on

oh ok, from what i have heard it is a close nit group and there are many different acivities you can be involved with, especially recreational sport.Everyone knows each other and usually get along really well because it is a small campus.

hmm.. i just want a nice flow from oxford to emory, and i want to be able to chill with some emory kids during my first two years as well-- whether it be in atlanta or emory college

WAIT-- I didn't realize Oxford was significantly easier to get into than Emory....

IMPORTANT QUESTION: Did any of you get a letter from Emory telling you about Oxford and suggesting you apply to it if you're interested?!? BECAUSE I DID and now I'm thinking that is a clue that I won't get in regular decision... ahh...

Yes. I believe they send letters about Oxford to all Emory applicants. My son applied ED II to Emory and received the same letter. He did not apply to Oxford - no interest.

phew, thanks donelyc!

How do you feel your stats are? You may have already stated but I didn't go back to look. Did you show lots of interest in Emory? Good luck! Other schools you have applied to? Just interested. Don't feel you have to tell me or reply.. Again, good luck!

I'd say my SATs are the only factor that would hurt me... they're at the very bottom of Emory's middle range... though I think everywhere else I am strong, like GPA, essay, recs, and especially extracurriculars... I have a lot of leadership roles in my school and have done a ton of community service. So I'm hoping those factors will help me distinguish myself. I visited Emory's campus and went to an info session in NYC, but I didn't have an interview. I applied to 9 other schools, which are very different from one another: Georgetown, Wash U, Cornell, Lehigh, Colby, Vanderbilt, Boston University, GW, and Washington and Lee.

any more feedback??????????

Bump ?

oxfords easier to get into than the public schools in my state UT and A&M and even has an OATS(Oxford Association of Texas Students), so its looking good for a Texas student like me. What scholarship opportunities have y'all found there?

um i was nowhere near thier full scholarship material, but I got the hopkins scholarship 8k a year.

My daughter applied to Emory and didn't receive any Oxford information. Did everyone else receive something regarding Oxford?
