i got a letter a couple days ago saying i've been named an emory u scholarship finalist, and in order to continue competing for 4-year awards, finalists need to go to oxford for a scholar weekend towards the end of February... my issue is that they don't pay for airfare, only accomodations once you get there. has anyone been in the same situation or does anyone have some input? woudl they still give you a good amount if you don't attend? i'm not 100% sure on oxford/emory so i'm hesitant of askin gmy parents to pay $400 to fly me over for a weekend.. thanks!

I've heard that Emory goes a lot on "demonstrated interest" by the student. If you don't show for the weekend, I doubt you would receive any offers of $.

I could be wrong, but that's my 2 cents.

Are you sure it was the Emory Scholars finalist letter? Most of us only got semi finalist letters about a week ago telling us the name finalist near the end of February. Emory Scholars Finalists must attend the weekend interview process on campus March 21 - 24th. To be considered as a finalist, you must attend the on-campus program. If you do not attend or do not make the finals, approx. 100 semifinalists will be considered for the John Emory 2/3 tuition scholarships.

Finalist Interview Weekend

For 2007, the interviews will take place March 21-24. Finalists will be brought to Emory (at no expense to them) for activities designed to help them become better acquainted with programs and opportunities at Emory and to aid the Scholars Selection Committee in making its final choices for the various awards. Attendance is mandatory for all scholar finalists. For more information on finalist weekend, please visit the scholarship candidates LearnLink subconference. Details on how to access this subconference can be found in the discussion board section of the Emory Scholars website.

i meant oxford college of emory u finalist. do you or anyone nelse have stats for oxford's scholarship considerations? are they pretty similar (ie in their emphasis on demonstrated interest by going)?
thanks!

Oxford finalist weekend is separate from Emory. Oxford does offer 4 year scholarships, (2 years @ Oxford, and 2 years @ Emory), but the scholarship is from Oxford. If you do not attend the Oxford weekend, you will not be considered for an Oxford scholarship, but it does not have any effect on the Emory scholars program, which is in March. I have one d at Emory on scholarship now who went to Oxford, and another competing in Feb.

Have all Oxford finalists been notified? Was not aware there was any specific date for notification.

I believe they have all been. My d received letter last Saturday and her friend received his on Monday, the 26th.

I just got my letter today. It was postmarked on the eighteenth and took two weeks to get here. And just when I had given up hope...

Yeah, I'm going to the Oxford Scholars Weekend, too and had to give up a trip to Spain (where I'd be right now) because I wouldn't have gotten back in time. We had already paid $500, non-refundable. :( I guess it's the sacrifices you make that show them how much you really want to go to that college. Do you think finalists automatically get a certain amount? Because if so, and you think there's a chance you could come here, $400 isn't so bad if you get a 4-year scholarship. But you've probably already made your decision because it's in 3 days, haha.
