My daughter just submitted her application to Oxford for a full year study abroad program at Pembroke. Anyone else's kids have experience with this?

Pembroke was Dr. Johnson's College. William Penn got kicked out.

She'll love it!

We have experience but from the other side of the fence, as it were. D is a UK home student, fulltime undergrad at Oxford and has yet to meet a US junior year abroader who is not having the time of his/her life. Students who come for only half a year are severely disadvantaged and others who don't live in college may have to work harder at integrating into the community, but sounds like your D will be in Pembroke. That's a great little college - I'm biased as it's my H's old college and we were married in the chapel... it is known as the 'poorest' of the colleges but is well situated and modesly pretty. The college cellar used to pride itself on its port....As to academics: one of D's best friends first came to Oxford on a study abroad program with WashU and the next year applied to do graduate work - at that point almost a pro forma exercise. She'd spent a year working with the professors/tutors who oversee the graduate programme and knew exactly what she wanted to do, who she wanted to supervise her thesis, etc. and they knew the quality of her work and welcomed her back. Ofcourse there are always some foolish students who go wild with the legal drinking age being 18 but I suppose they too are having the time of their lives....

I did my undergrad degree at Pembroke!! I graduated in June, I read Oriental Studies. If you or your D have any specific questions about the college or Oxford in general, PM me :)
