Oxford tutorial system

I'm intrigued by Williams College's 2:1 tutorial classes, modeled off of Oxford's. Are there other U.S. schools with a similar system or setup?

Princeton has a similar tutorial system for at least some classes (especially freshman ones, IIRC). I am sure that many LACs also have them in place.

Harvard does, especially in the upper level humanities courses.

Many colleges have small seminars -- often under 6 students plus a professor. These are not strictly the same as an Oxford-style tutorial, i.e., two students presenting alternating papers to one professor.

Just and FYI that isn't particularly relevant to the question:

Oxford and Cambridge often have tutorials that are 1:1 to as well.

Baelor: From what I've found, most LACs favor seminar-style classes--which are wonderful, no mistake. But I was specifically curious about the 2:1 or 1:1 tutorial courses that Williams makes a big deal out of.

Oh, okay. I know Princeton emphasizes the true tutorial system, so that's another reach if you're interested.

Lawrence University Lawrence Student-initiated programs

Thanks for the headsup--Princeton is out of the question for me because I want the double-major option available, but it could well be useful for future researchers/Googlers.

Oooh, thanks overseas! Lawrence looks interesting, and much less reachy than Williams.

LU sponsored a conference on this topic last year. Check the course offerings at the very end and there is a list of offered tutorials in the past in many fields of study. They have a wonderfully organized close knit educational program.

I've always wondered though how Oxford and Cambridge can afford a 1:1 tutorial system given that each has over 12,000 undergraduate students and both are relatively underfunded compared to their peer institutions in the US (not least because of the cap on undergraduate tuition for UK/EU students imposed by the British government).

Ohio University's honor college is tutorial (according to them, I just read it in a brochure I didn't look at it closer).

in natural science in the mid-90's at Oxford-the tutorials (or "tutes") were NOT one on one-I think there were more like three or four or five of us getting our tutorial at a time. Actually-I remember thinking this was a good thing that there were others to answer some of the questions!
