Just wondering, which university (Oxford or Cambridge) is more well known in the US? Amongst average americans and among professionals?
imo, not a meaningful difference. Oxford might have a slight edge, if only b/c in some circles Cambridge means Harvard
Something like “University of…” is very hard to decide as popular among more than 300 million residents. However, a city like Cambridge is definitely more popular than Oxford, especially due to the trends every now and then with the Duchess.
I’d say they are equal in reputation.
About the same. But Michigan State is more “well known” than either one in most circles.
The same. Some people use the term Oxbridge to connote both.
About the same, maybe a slight edge to Oxford just because most of the recent British prime ministers went to Oxford, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, David Cameron. I have read that many startups in Britain are founded by Cambridge grads. London School of Economics is also very well respected, especially for those interested in a job on Wall Street.
They’re roughly equal. Personally, I prefer Cambridge since it has Newton, Darwin, and Turing among its alumni. But Oxford has plenty of noteworthy alums as well.
I think they’re basically equal in terms of American opinion. Most people here barely recognize the differences between our colleges, much less the nuances between foreign ones.
I doubt most Americans have any idea where the British Prime Ministers went to college. Most probably couldn’t even say where President Obama went to college.
To the vast majority of Americans the schools are equivalent.
Going to either is the equivalent of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford. I think only about 50 Americans per year are admitted, and admission is all about AP and SAT II scores. Cambridge is better known for sciences and engineering.
LSE and Imperial College London are not as well known.
@toooldforschool, not only test scores (unlike most other UK unis) but also an interview where a professor will grill you.
Yes, the UK system is different (3 yr bachelors, directly into your major, little/no ‘core’ classes) and starting there is like starting as a sophomore here, hence the emphasis on AP and SAT II.
I doubt most Americans know who the British PM is.
in my opinion, oxford.
I doubt most Americans know what Britain is.
I had a colleague who was English (from a middle class background from a factory town with no factory) with a BS/MS in Mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge. He said Trinity College had a zillion Nobel Prize winners associated with it, and was where Prince Charles went, so I assumed Trinity College was prestigious. He said he left Trinity College off his resume, because people would assume it was some Trinity College in the US he went to. So I am sure Oxbridge is very impressive, but people in the US may have no idea about Oxbridge colleges.
