Oxy RD Discussion 2015

Pretty low I think, admissions officer said something like 35%? Could be wrong.
I was waitlisted, and I really want to go but I need to get some kind of scholarship or I can’t afford it. Do you think there is any chance that I might get merit scholarship money from the waitlist if admitted?

Stats
unweighted gpa: 3.7
weighted gpa: 4.1
IB diploma candidate

SAT I: 2040
SAT II:Literature 740, US History 710
AP/IB: bio 5, history 5

I know that it is unlikely, but I just can’t afford it otherwise, and I want to go so badly!
I’d appreciate anyones input.

Im just curious, dancepsychlove, why did u end up choosing davidson? You seemed so excited about oxy!

It’s been very hard for me to decide my choice. Davidson is the school I’ve always loved, and when I first visited it, I wanted no where else. My college counselor, however, seemed to think that I had no chance at Davidson. So I gave up. And that’s when I interviewed for Oxy, became enthused, and started posting here. When I got my acceptance to Davidson, I didn’t know what to think because I thought for sure I was going to Oxy. Davidson, I decided, is closer to my heart…I guess I’m saying that it’s my gut feeling that made me choose it.

Dancepsychlove–I agree with previous poster, you are a special person and no doubt will find happiness wherever you go–best of luck at Davidson.

6100 applicants and 540 acceptances. That’s about 9% admit rate so good job to all of those who got in. Seriously, that is amazing. I was a recruited athlete…heard very few of us got in. I am an honors/ap student with a 4.1 gpa so it’s not like I couldn’t hack the work load. Oh well - Oxy not in the stars for me but I got into all my other top pics. Good luck to all of you at Oxy! It’s a great school.

Uh, definitely not. It’s a class of 540 so they probably accepted at least 1500.

Yeah, no way. That’s the kind of acceptance rate that schools like MIT have.

Their previous acceptance rate was 42%, and they overaccepted so I’m guessing that it’s something like 35% now.

norcalchica was right. on the Oxy website, they said they received more than 6000 applicants and accepted exactly 545. might be an error?

Where on the website does it say this? I’m trying to find it.

Never mind, I found it. It does NOT say that. It says that they are filling a class of approximately 545, and they accepted 38% of applicants.

I got rejected :'(

Expeliarmus, I’m so sorry to hear that. I know you really wanted it.

So my daughter was accepted, and she is happy. But…(there is always a but isn’t there?), we are now struggling to decide if Oxy represents a “good value” compared to her other options. In short, Oxy is more expensive than the other schools to which she applied, and her FA package is significantly lower than what was offered by the other schools. (In no way do we feel short changed by Oxy–it is a well regarded school, they have a very large number of competitve applicants, etc. so I am not surprised that her aid package is less than some of the other schools.) Over 4 years (assuming no inflation in tuition/room/board costs — obviously not realistic), our out of pocket costs at Oxy wil be somewhere between $50K - $75K higher than what she would pay if she went elsewehere. No doubt Oxy is a fine school—just have to determine if makes financial sense given daughter’s other options. Congratualtions to everyone who was accepted!

The name of the game is to get the best education/experience possible and come out with the least possible amount of debt. Oxy is no doubt a great school, but if she has other options that are similar with more financial aid, it wouldn’t make sense to put yourself in a tight situation.

@BefuddledParent > It was the only college that I really wanted to get in…Maybe the love for the college doesn’t matter…what matter is the money stashed for the college life, and the numbers, numbers which cannot reflect the true potentiality of one!!!

Just got my acceptance today!! Only school to consider my family “needy” so they win major points in my book. Question: Does the merit aid come with the acceptance package??

Sent from my SPH-D700 using CC App

@PrinceMuzic

The merit aid does come with the acceptance package along with any other aid that you receive.

to all you waitlisted: i will be declining my acceptance. so i hope one of you gets the spot! :D

i love oxy still! i got the trustee scholarship, and they have super generous financial packages. nonetheless, my parents would have to do the federal direct plus loans. However, the interest rate is at 7.9% and my parents refused to take these loans. no way to fund my way at oxy. :(

for those that are going: have fun at oxy!

Waitlisted

3.51 UW GPA w/3 APs
1880 SAT (600 cr, 630 m, 650 w)

I had an interview and I sent in a music supplement (I play saxophone) and an extra teacher letter of recommendation and those things may have helped me be offered a spot on the wait list rather than denied. Oxy is my first choice so I am staying on the waitlist.
