Ok, so i've gotten back all my college choices and i want to know your guys's opinions.

Out of the colleges i've gotten into, I'm seriously considering:
-Occidental College
-UC Davis

Other ones that i got into, but am not really enthusiastic about:
-UC Irvine (too close to home)
-George Washington (too expensive)
-Cal Poly SLO (why go to SLO when i have Davis or Oxy to go to?)
-UCSC (i would consider it since i got chancellor's and money from them, but it's UCSC, i feel like it wouldn't be nearly as great of a college experience than the other schools i got in.)

BTW, i'm a poli sci major, and i plan on going to law school. If i go to Oxy, i would try to do there 3/2 BA/JD program with Columbia so i save some money and time.

I know they're two VERY different schools in almost every way and i think thats why i'm getting so confused in my decision.

"When I was applying to colleges, I was focused only on small liberal arts places. They kind of all seemed the same. They were all in different places with different specialties, but they all shared the same general idea. Oxy seemed different to me, though. It was so dedicated to creating a fully functional multi-cultural environment--it really struck me. Not only that but the people are so FRIENDLY! The students are bright and friendly, and never hesitated to start up a conversation with a lost little prospective student. Sure, it was really small, but that meant the professors were always on hand and ready to help students out with a paper or question in general.

I made my choice to go to OXY and I haven't regretted it yet. It is a great community with the huge LA right nearby--an awesome combination. If anyone is really into really interesting taboo classes, amazing diverse people, and a place that feels intimate and familiar within a big city, this is definitely a place to consider" Dreamer 27

My daughter chose Oxy over Davis- I got to meet her Oxy friends over spring break who were all very happy, still ecstatic- dreamer 27 was one of the kids I met. My d says her friends who chose Davis or Berkeley are not nearly as happy.
Occidental has a great reputation in poli sci and great programs like the one with Columbia. Good luck with your decision.

OXY OXY OXY!! TRUST ME ON THIS! I have heard many stories about UCD. It is very isolated, lots of drug use, and VERY VERY BORING. This isn't just from one person too. This is from several spanning ten years.

have u visited the campus? i would definetly attend their "accepted student" tours/events to get a feel of which campus/environment ur more comfortable in and maybe drop in some classes to see if u like the education...i know it's sort of shallow to just base it on the campus and classes but it does offer more insight as to where u feel like attending

I've seen both campuses already, and am going again this coming week.

I used to live in Los Angeles, and i know what it's like there. It's alright. With that said, i love occidental's campus, which is where the majority of my time is going to be spent. Also, from everyone i've asked, LA is the greatest college town to be in, so there's always that too.

IN terms of Davis...It's beautiful up there, i can't really comment on how much there is to do up there though? It's really serene, small town quaint, and it's a big school, so i can't see how that combination works out in the long run ( the longest time i spent in Davis consecutively was 2 days, so i can't get a clear picture). I also like the norcal, bohemian, liberal side of its location

This is the most ridiculous misinformation. First of all there is little to no drug use in Davis. My d is a highly social freshman (in a sorority) and has seen no drugs at any parties or functions. The arrest rates for drugs are almost non existant. As to boring that is just false. UCD is a very fun and active campus. IMO it is both wrong and ridiculous to report infomation from ten years ago. Obviously you have never been to the campus. (at least not any time recently) UCD has undergone major growth and extensive construction of housing, sports facilities, a brand new arts center (the Mondavi Center) and all kinds of new buildings to house the various majors. Davis is a college town and it is always bustling with activity. My d hardly has time for a phone call much less a visit. The campus is home to the largest student athletic support group west of the Mississippi (the Aggie Pack). The school enjoys 26 D1 sports teams including football. UCD has one of the largest internship and intramural programs in the country. Oxy is a fine school, I have toured the campus and found it to be a nice place. Please don't disparage a school based on old (unreliable) infomation. Unless you have been there you shouldn't give advice.

I'm not pretending to be an expert on this CM16. I'm only reporting on what I've heard from my friends who attended UCD a decade apart and had very similar negative experiences.

Please don't report second hand and highly inaccurate information as facts. Also your use of "trust me on this" does make you sound like you have some sort of credibility or expertise that clearly you don't have.

um...just to let you know, you also reported second hand information as facts.

and unless you and your daughter have a one in a million relationship, I highly doubt your daughter would tell you about drug use at her college.

kmass, just for clarification..there is no "poli sci" major at Oxy. It's Politics or, possibly, a major in Diplomacy in World Affairs that might interest you if Political Science is your bent. I will tell you to definitely plan to attend admitted students day at Oxy, it's what made all the difference in my son's decision to attend Oxy (politics major). Good luck, and congratulations on being accepted....it's an amazing education!

I live in a town near Davis, and it's been the sterotypical "local" forever and people still love it. Everyone roots for the Aggies. It's a really great school with some amazing opportunities. My grandpa works there and he enjoys just walking around. The campus and town are both really charming.
