P/NP for UC to UC transfer

I currently attend UCSB and is planning on transferring to another UC.

Is it better to have a lower GPA by taking a GE course P/NP or is it better to take it P/NP and have a higher GPA?

I am taking CC classes over the summer. Will the grades I receive at CC be included in the overall UC GPA that I will be applying with or separately?

I’m not sure about P/NP for UC to UC transfers. For CC transfers, you can have up to 15 (I think?) units of P/NP, but they CANNOT be major pre-reqs. I think IGETC (the CC version of GE) has to also be a letter grade, but I’m not positive since the requirements vary by CC.

And yes, CC classes/grades will count into the overall UC GPA, so long as they are UC transferable courses.

@luckie1367 Did you transfer from UC to UC?

No, I am a CC to UC transfer.

I think @81Mamba is a UC to UC transfer, as is @fncrane (hopefully!). Maybe they can give you some insights.

yes indeedy! although I’m not a successful UC-UC transfer as I only got waitlisted but I’ll try to help lol.

Take it with the letter grade, honestly, esp if it’s a GE. GE courses aren’t designed to tank your GPA so it shouldn’t be a problem getting a decent grade. I’m pretty sure the same rule for number of P/NP units applies for UC-UC transfers, as well as the rule that you cannot take prereq courses P/NP. When you take CC courses over the summer it does not go into your UC GPA. There will be a section at the bottom of your transcript that says something like “other schools attended” and it will list the courses that you took and the grades you received ~ similar to how your AP credits are on your transcripts. Hope that helps!

If your taking the GE courses at a CC, I recommend taking it for a grade especially if you can pull out an A. From what I heard (from AskMsSun), those CC classes WILL be factored into your UC transferable GPA so it could very well boost your GPA. But like @fncrane said, when you reach your final UC, the CC GPA does not factor into your UC GPA for graduation. Those courses would be meant to boost your GPA for your transfer application.
