p/np or W, which is the lesser evil?

I'm taking a GE class that is in no way tied to my major. I couldn't afford the book, missed a few days and am behind on assignments. Horrible, i know, but now I've changed it to p/np so it won't affect my GPA. If I drop with a W that will drop me down to 9.5 units and I'll lose some financial aid and maybe even have to pay some back, so I've heard. Is it best to stick to the p/np and try a little harder to pass, but if I don't and get the np, is that better than a W?
