how does gpa calculation work for p/np?

I think it just doesn't count into your GPA. If you P, it doesn't affect your GPA. If you NP, it somewhat hurts you in terms of the number of NP you can get before being put on probation.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Correct as far as I know, it does not affect Berkeley GPA. However, if you fail the class (get an np) and apply to law school, they factor it in as a 0.0. I'm not sure how medical schools or other graduate or professional schools work. I would guess graduate schools (as in the academic graduate schools) see it as relevant or not on a situational basis.
