I just called the Governor's Schools contact us number and they said that they do not know if the programs will be cancelled. The woman I spoke with said that they expect an answer sometime at the end of this week. Apparently, they have not been cancelled just yet!

Hey, i got this message on facebook:

Dear Members,

We have been asked by a program director to correct the following statement from our last group message:

"It is with deep regret and sadness that we notify you that the 2009 PGSE programs have been canceled by the Department of Education. The program directors were notified of the state's decision during a meeting in Harrisburg on Thursday, February 26. Applicants for summer 2009 will be receiving a letter of regret in the mail in the near future."

The Secretary of Education, Dr. Zahorchak made it very clear on PCN on February 26 that these programs would not be funded by the Department of Education this year. Quote: "This decision is made for the appropriation, so we're going into a year that will not have Governor's Schools."

However, we cannot speak about the course that individual programs and their directors will take for the summer of 2009.

PGSE is still up for vote in the legislature as part of cuts to the 2009-2010 state budget. Keep calling and writing letters to your legislators and the officials of the Department of Education. Now, more than ever, our voices need to be heard.

-Admins

My thinking about this is that even if the state cuts funding, the schools may still have them. Especially the larger schools like Carnegie Mellon, Pitt, and Penn State.
When you think about it, at 3.2 million for 8 schools, thats 400,000 per school. And schools with lots of money like those i mentioned probably could afford it, or even could offer it at a minimal cost for parents. Let's hope they are not cut though, that would make things a lot easier!

also, if you click this and go to PCN call-in and scroll to the one with secretary of education with zahorchak. you can see what he had to say about the budget.

Well sciences is cut for sure...damn. I got an interview for TASP, but I still need to find another backup. This sucks, I've known about how awesome Governor's School is since I was in Junior High...so stupid, what a useless cut.

i dont understand what happens if the state legislators don't approve the budget cut?
They vote on Tuesday, and senators invited a group of PGSe activists to present letters.
So if they don't approve the budget cut then we just have unallocated money?
This is such a crazy situation.
Now i have to look for other summer programs....and they are expensive!

Does anyone have any news?

yeah, does anybody have any news? because i've yet to receive any emails/notifications about official cancellations.

Check the PA Governor's School website, it has most of the information regarding the programs on there.
