Anyone out there with kids taking AP courses through PA Homeschoolers? I thought a review thread/support thread might be nice, and I can’t find any on CC.
D21 is currently taking AP Chem and AP Comp Sci, and she thoroughly enjoys both (AP Chem is the most difficult course she has ever taken, but she enjoys it and happily works her buns off to stay afloat). She is happy she already had Honors Chem and some coding experience, otherwise she says she would feel lost in both.
She’s taking more AP courses with PA Homeschoolers next year, and she’s looking forward to them.
I’m taking APUSH with PA Homeschoolers and I am loving it. I’ve taken AP online courses with a couple other providers and PA Homeschoolers, while being the most expensive, is my favorite.I like being able to choose from a very wide range in teachers per subject; I chose someone who is an APUSH exam grader for the Collegeboard. Homework seems heavy compared to my public school friends taking APUSH and I think I will be extremely well prepared for the exam. I wish I had my other APs here (although they don’t have AP Latin, which I’m taking with Memoria Press).
@SuperGymnast_04 , that is great to hear! Do you mind sharing which teacher you have? My daughter will likely take APUSH in 11th grade. My daughter has taken only two classes with PAHS but enjoys them both (AP Chem and AP Comp Sci A). Lots of work but a great education.
I have Lisa Hawkins. She is fantastic and has great reviews. I don’t know if we’re allowed to post outside links, so PM me if you want the link to her website for more info. Like many online AP teachers, I believe she is also teaching college classes and several other online history classes. Somehow, she manages to grade all assignments, discussion forums and respond to messages very promptly.
Unlike other online classes I’ve taken, there is no live Adobe Connect or Skype classroom session. We watch lectures and presentations created by Mrs. Hawkins and by other fellow APUSH exam graders/university professors. I prefer this method because it allows me to have a more flexible schedule than if I were required to login to class at a certain time. You can always email her with questions. However, it is something to keep in mind because some students might prefer having a live class with their teachers and classmates.
Thank you! I have the PAHS website info so I know how to find out more about her (no need to post links). I appreciate the input. My daughter takes a mixture of online classes - one, like her AP Chem class, has no live meetings but does have a very active 24/7 discussion board and there are always TAs there (and often the teacher himself). Her other AP class, AP Comp Sci, has a live component. My daughter does well with both types…though she too has a busy schedule so it is easier for her if she has the no-live option because of the flexibility reason you mentioned. I appreciate your review. Maybe you and she will be in a class together next year - she is taking a few more APs with PAHS.
My son has taken 7 classes with them. Everything is fantastic except they do NOT coordinate vacation times.
I can’t even plan for him to visit his accepted college admitted student days, because of the lack of coordination.
For example:
This last week he was off for one class (spring break). Next week he will be off for a different class but started the other one back up again. Then the week after he will be off for 2, but on for the other two…NO break at all.
He got literally 4 days off during Christmas/ New years…4 total days the whole 2 weeks everyone else received.
This is truly the only complaint I have had. The instructors and owners are fantastic and he’s enjoyed the courses immensely.
It’s been kind of stressful for us as a family, because we haven’t even been able to plan a get away.
We have taken many courses with PAHS and were impressed with the quality of their courses. Many of the students in her AP English course competed in a national writing competition and placed in first and second place in their state. Many of my daughter’s classmates have ended up at top schools including the Ivys.
I also felt that they were expensive but years later appreciate the strong foundation their courses provided for college level work.
As someone looking into taking AP classes with PA Homeschoolers, I thank you for this thread! I’m planning on taking either AP Euro or AP World there, so if anyone has any feedback on either of these courses - that’d be lovely. They seem like a great organization that can provide solid education.
Quick question: anyone know what Learning Managment System they use?
