Pace University Video Audition

Hey there! I am working on submitting my video audition to Pace Univ for the BFA acting program. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about how strict they are on time limits. They say each monologue should be 90 sec. and my monologues currently go over that. One by about 30 sec and the other by 15 sec.
Has anyone already recieved a callback from Pace? Were your monologues exactly at 90 sec?

Thanks for your help!

I don’t know much about video auditions, but for live auditions you should never, never, NEVER, go over the time limit. The time limit is a MAXIMUM, not a minimum! I don’t see why video auditions would be any different.

Basically, they have given you 3 minutes, but you are taking 3 minutes 45 seconds.

For live auditions, they might simply cut you off when you hit 3 minutes. For a videotaped audition, they might just stop watching the video. And they will think of you as someone who doesn’t follow directions and who wastes time (auditions always seem to run late!). In actuality, the auditors will probably make up their mind about you within the first ten or fifteen seconds of your monologue.

You are going to have to either make cuts in your monologues to bring them under 90 seconds, or find different monologues.

follow directions is very important thats all I have to say. it says something about who you are and how you approach the process.

ok great! Thanks for your help. I will make sure to get my monologues under the appropriate time!

I have another question on the same subject. For one of my auditions it says each monologue should be 2-3 min. And one of my monologues is a little under 2 min? Is this a problem? I didnt know if this was as much as an issue since its not exceeding the time given. My other monologue is 2:30 sec.

I’ve heard that this is okay…and my son’s monologues have been slightly shorter than some schools specify, but nobody has complained yet! At one school (Ithaca), the auditor did time his two required monologues with a stopwatch, and I’ve heard this is not uncommon. But I’m pretty sure you’re okay with slightly shorter ones as long as they aren’t, y’know, ten seconds! ;)

Hi everyone!

I hope you all are getting excited about audition season coming up!

A few notes on the questions I’m seeing regarding time limits for monologues.

If a school mentions a time limit for the requested monolgues, you should make sure that the monologue does not run over. You should expect that you will be cut off at the designated time limit - regardless of whether there is a timer in the room or not. The time limit is basically out of fairness for other students who are auditioning and to keep auditions on schedule. Here at Pace, we will stop the monologue after 90 seconds.

Shorter monologues are, of course, fine as long as they have a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Keep in mind that Pace requires all monologues to be from contemporary (post-1945), from published plays (not from monologue books), and under 90 seconds. Pace also requires a scene work component - you don’t need to prepare for this (cold read with partner) - and a movement callback for finalists.

A few tips:
-Don’t choose a monologue that requires you to use props or relies on you having to mime a prop.
-Monologues should be contrasting, but should be close to your age and type. Please don’t choose monologues with extreme characterizations, i.e. crazy/insane, etc.
-Ultimately, we want to see YOU, because you are unique.
-Good monologues are ACTIVE - for example, the character NEEDS something from his/her scene partner and the monologue shows this need and the tactics the character is using to get what he/she wants. Remember, you are always working off of something - either another character in the play, an internal object, etc. Monologues that simply tell a story of an event are not ACTIVE and don’t necessarily convey how you would work on stage.
-Have a clear ending to your monologue.

Hi everyone,

My name is Wayne Petro and I am the Recruitment Coordinator & Incoming Advisor for Pace Performing Arts. Additionally, I teach UNV 101 Freshman Seminar courses for our majors. I am your go-to person for all things related to admissions, audition, enrollment, and first-year advising.

We’ve been receiving some messages about not being able to reach anyone in the Performing Arts Department - and for good reason: we’ve moved! We’re now in our new Performing Arts Building, with brand new phones, facilities, everything! Our new phones are so high-tech that many aspects are new to our IT teams and some call-forwarding aspects are still being ironed out.

Happy Audition Season!

Does this apply to the video audition, as well? For me, each one must be 90 seconds and mine are (with the introductions in the videos) about two minutes and thirty seconds each… Without the introductions they’re more about two minutes. Should I submit it anyway or edit parts out of the video? Will it be awkward or unacceptable if the video has cuts??
