I will be living in an apartment next year and my main worry is what will happen to my packages if I'm not in the apartment (which I most likely won't be). So my question is, is it worth it to pay more to get an apartment with an on-site manager that will hold packages for me? What are your experiences in getting packages delivered to you?

Even if you are not at home you can usually tell them to just leave the package inside the entrance or in front of your room. That’s what I usually did.

If you’re not there, usually the package is left at your door, with the office, or in the lobby where the mailboxes are. You can pick it up at your own convenience.

Sometimes packages need to be signed for first and can’t just be dropped off anywhere. You get a slip of paper from the courier (UPS, FedEx) on the door saying this. Of course, sometimes your neighbor or landlord signs and holds it for you. If this isn’t the case you can:

Sign the slip of paper and leave it there
Sign up for UPS My Choice and authorize shipment release
Track your package, get delivery alert to know when to be home to sign for it
Leave personalized note with signature & instructions on drop-off (can anyone confirm this?)

If you miss your package,
if you ordered through USPS, they are located at 2000 Allston Way
if you ordered through FedEx, they are located at 1600 63rd St, Emeryville
if you ordered through UPS, they are located at 1601 Atlas Rd, Richmond

If you ordered through Amazon, most of the time they leave it on the door.
However, if you order something that requires a signature, don’t try to miss it or else you have to travel far to pick it up.

If you order through Amazon, then yes, they usually leave it at the door (or in the main hallway area of your apartment complex if they have access–some apartments have outside buzzer systems in which guests can be let in by residents). If it’s for UPS or something that requries a signature, what they’ll usually do is they’ll come to your apartment, and if you’re not there, they’ll leave a little note saying that you have a package and they stopped by, but you weren’t there. Second time, same deal. Third time, they usually just leave the package outside the door. This has been my experience, but apparently for some people, they leave the packages at the shipping place to be picked up? That’s never happened to me though.

In any case, it’s annoying, but not a big enough of an issue for you to choose apartment X over apartment Y.
