Packing for Indoc?

I will be attending the merchant marine academy starting in july. I know i dont need to bring much to indoc, but i was wondering what other things i should bring that they do not mention in the logging in book. Do I need school supplys like paper and notebooks or will i end up getting them when i get to school? Thanks

there is no need to bring paper and stuff like that since there is a store at school where you can get all of that.

GG are we (the moms and dads) going to be able to put a face to your name at indoc? You are a DI right? Would like to have a visual of who will put our kids through the wringer. :)

Remember that Amazon.com is your friend - you can get most things there and have them shipped directly. Anyway you look at it, you will become experts in the Postal Service Priority Mail boxes, especially the one price ones. However, KP does not man its PO on Sat. so all must arrive by Friday.

Well, we made a stab at getting those 14 pairs of everything packed along with the four white towels. Not much room for anything else! Let me say we put things in ziploc bags to get the air out too. His duffel can also be carried on his back. There is no way even a desk fan can be packed so he will have to carry that.

And to think I felt sorry for him when he carried all that weight on his back in middle school. I guess he was in training! ha

he won't be carrying anything on his back or on his shoulder......the candidates/plebe candidates/plebes are not allowed to used shoulder straps

ok , so what kind of duffel should I get? A roller one, or would an old Navy Sea Bag work? Think we have a few of them laying around in the closet.

i just remember last year that we dropped off all the stuff that we brought in o'hara and then by the time we got to our companies the stuff was there. then you are given a laundry bag i think and you put a lot of your issued things in it and you just carry it around

hey supportmom,,,no need to do the fan thing until you hear what company he is assigned to......if it is air conditioned no need for a fan ,,and you can order one for him and have it shipped if he is not in ac unit

I think Is2day mentioned that 3rd and 4th company have ac, 1st co will have it next year, does that mean in time for indoc?

Yes 1st co should be done for indoc.....i honestly would still bring a fan tho whether or not you use it in indoc is up for debate but i know i used my throughout the year

I would definitely wait on the fan till you know which company. Most things can get there in 2/3 days priority mail. Depending on what location you are sending them from, I eventually just ordered my favorite size priority boxes/labels from the post office, so I'd have them on hand. The post office window for KP is closed on Saturday so timing can be crucial for those goodies to be there for the weekend.

Well then your probably better off taking it, better to be a little cooler than hotter than ....... ever, right?

Could always sell it to 2nd Company or just keep it around in the unlikely event that the AC breaks down.

or band co, I don't think they have ac yet either ?

well if you tell them you don't play an instrument, no band co for you, so that narrows the chances, but even so, it is so scorchingly hot in the non- AC barracks that 2-3 days without a fan would be absolutely horrid. it's better to have it with you and not need it. you can get a decent one for under $10

Ive herd there are swimming requirements, am i going to need to pack a bathing suit?

Looking at pictures they all seem to be standard issue.

They will issue you a suit. However I did have to send my daughter's other suits down later (for spares & sunbathing) and her goggles. So pack yours up and let your mom know where they are, so if you want them she can just pop them in the mail.

im staying in 4th co for the summer right now... i am still using my fan its nice just to keep air moving....
