So I don't know if there's many current/previous Scripps students on here (besides Student615, who of course as everyone knows on here is incredibly helpful :) ) but next month is looming and I'm trying to figure out how I should pack and what I should pack.

My parents and I are flying down the day before, and we plan on bringing 3 large suitcases to check in and 2 or 3 regular suitcases/backpacks for carry-on. Pretty much bringing as much as we can from here and then I guess if we need to when we get there we'll make a run to some stores. Don't really want to ship anything, but if we end up having to, we will.

I know there was a featured discussion awhile ago about what not to pack for college, but I'm just wondering if at Scripps/Southern California anyone DEFINITELY recommends bringing or not bringing something as far as maybe types of clothes, office/school supplies, dorm room things go.

sun screen, lip balm w/ an SPF and flip flops 8). A small oscillating fan would probably be nice but there is a Target relatively close by (East on 210toward Upland). Seriously consider buying the room/office supply stuff once you arrive there. The same mall that has a Target has an Office Max ( or maybe staples) and a Bed Bath and Beyond. If either of my daughters is fortunate to be where you are next fall, that is what we will likely do.

Congratulations on your hard earned success and best wishes for a wonderful year at Scripps. Please keep us posted!

Husband and I arrived with d from East Coast two days before move in. She packed two duffles of personal stuff. For fun we arrived in LA at midnight, drove up to Sequoia National Park through the night (having slept on th plane and at Denny's for a short bit on the way to Sequoia), arrive at dawn-breath-taking - no cars, just giant trees, set up a simple campsite (two duffles)- it was a weekday so the campground was empty. Hiked that day, slept in campground that night, got up in early morning, did one of the most beautiful hikes up to lakes where we swam with no one around (easy hiking, like a sidewalk compared to the White Mountains), back to car mid afternoon, drove up to Kings Canyon to look around, then back to Pasadena where we stayed the night for $70 in a clean, quiet motel. Up in the morning to Scripps move in. Bought just about everything she neededfor her room in Targets, etc. Loved meeting her roommates (it was a roomy triple) and their parents. Huge dorm rooms, she had a porch overlooking a beautiful garden. Amazing campus. Attended all parental events, kissed d goodbye in the late afternoon, drove to beach, stayed in $100 motel near beach/ airport. To airport next morning. It was a wonderful trip. Highly recommend Sequoia. Next time we will fly into Fresno and out from LA if d#3 chooses (or gets into) Pomona or Scripps. I hope so, we had a blast.

Well being from Oregon, where there isn't a sales tax, I really wanted to buy some of my stuff before I come down in the fall. Plus, I plan to drive down in the car I'm getting this summer anyways. And I already own a mini fridge... basically everything just points to my driving being very convenient. Anything that I can't fit/won't have room for I'll ship or wait to buy. Since I have no idea what kind of space my dorm will have, I probably won't go for storage/organization items until I get there. Many of the girls on Facebook, including myself, are pretty keen on a trip to the Container Store :)

Eternal Icicle, that is basically what my plan is: buy as much in OR so sales tax won't have to be dealt with. I've lived in a sales tax state for 2 years and I'm still not used to it...

I don't have a fridge right now but I'm pretty sure I'm getting one and my pop says we can just ship it over there. I know we're probably going to get storage/organization-type items there too because there's just really no room to pack it.

And yeah I am part of the Facebook group and I remember we were talking about a trip to the Container Store, and I do know that there is a Scripps-sponsored run to Target sometime during the orientation days. I love the Container Store. I just envision such a more organized life when I go there.

On a side note, my brother bought me a pair of Rainbow sandals knowing I was going to school in CA. They are quite comfortable even though I had to break them in.

Do you know what dorm you'll be in? I didn't need a floor fan my freshman year (GJW), but a small desk fan was nice, and I did need floor fans every year after (old dorms).

Agree with historymom that some stuff will really be easier to buy down there...floor fan (if necessary), perhaps school supplies, shelves (if you want them), etc. I've read on CC that you can order stuff from Bed Bath & Beyond and pick it up from the outlet of your choice, so that might let you shop locally without having to ship. I don't know whether that would also let you avoid sales tax. There's a BB&B near campus, as well as a Target, a Wal-Mart, and office supply stores.

Bring a beach towel. Do bring warm clothes, but nothing heavy-duty (i.e. no ski jacket unless you plan on skiing...I did have a winter pea coat, and I used it and was glad for it, but it was never absolutely necessary...scarves got use, but no other outerwear).

For the most part, I'd say that general packing lists will still be applicable, but with an emphasis on flip flops and with no need for heavy-duty winter wear.

Enjoy :)

ETA: One semi-goofy addition. There's tons of stuff within day-tripping distance from Claremont. After freshman year (when my roommate had us covered), I bought a really cheap basic backpack to bring down with me. Very, very helpful at Disneyland (and many similar places), and more convenient than emptying and carrying my huge school backpack or a regular purse. Not an absolute necessity by any means, but helpful.

I'd never been before going to Scripps, but I probably went 10-ish times during college, and had a season pass for one year. It's an easy trip if you want (and have the means) to make it...30-40 minutes in good traffic.

I think the only regular school-organized trip is once each year for first years, and peer mentors might also have the option of going along (don't quote me on either of those facts). I had a few friends with season passes, so had numerous opportunities to tag along and carpool. Visits maintained a relatively high amount of novelty, but in my own experience, they weren't tough to come by :)

One thing that no one has really mentioned (and I hate to tell you) is that the first three weeks of school, it gets as hot as 110!!!! And if you don't live in an air conditioned dorm (GJW, Routt, Frankle) you WILL need one. My first year I lived in Clark (no air conditioning) and my two roommates and I each had fans on with no relief. But it passes, and either way the first week or so you're outside most of the time anyway because of orientation.

I'll see if I can think of anything else...
