Packing List

For current Yalies - what are the essentials to bring for a male dorm?

Current list includes - minifridge, microwave, lamps, sheets, tvs/gaming system. That is about it at this point.

You’re froco will probably send you a move in/shopping list. Here are some things my froco emailed me:

Pillows + pillowcases- (You wouldn’t believe how many people forget something as simple and comfy as pillows)
Bed sheets (X long, full size)- The bookstore, IKEA, and a couple other places sell sheets and cases, but they have a somewhat limited selection so if you’re picky supply your own! A spare might be nice just in case the other is dirty and there’s no time to do laundry. You can go to the mall that’s a bit farther away when you get here to get sheets when you get here to avoid paying ridic prices.
Eggcrates/mattress pad- A good investment. Yale mattresses are basic and uncomfortable to most.
Blanket/comforter
Towels- bring spares too.

Lamps- Your suite may not have overhead lighting.
Surge protectors
Batteries (but you can pick these up anywhere easily)
Fan- It’ll be nice during the fall and spring.

Clothes hangers- pretty cheap at lots of places but its something you always overlook and take for granted
A light jacket- it gets pretty chilly in late october/november (especially for those who consider 60 degrees brisk weather)
A nice winter jacket- You’ll need it. It will get cold. Not a priority now if you’re limited in space.
Rainboots (wellies)- trust me. Girls are lucky you can wear rainboots. Guys, something waterproof is necessary or else you’ll go through too many pairs of socks
Something nice and semiformal/business casual- We dress up, a lot. Boys you’ll break out the button downs and blazers several times in the first month. Girls, same with dresses or nice slacks. During orientation and the welcome ceremony everyone dresses up and goes to Woolsey Hall to hear Dean Miller and the keynote speak–you don’t want to be the only one in sweats and a I <3 NY tee do you?
Umbrella- Bookstore sells these but if you’re like me you’ll lose these often.

Microwave/minifridge/water boiler- both prohibited by the fire department but everyone has one (necessary for late night munching). Bring a cover too for the 2 times a year the fire marshall comes during their ANNOUNCED visit. Even if you fail it the first time all you have to do is sign a form with your suite to say that the violation is removed and maybe go through a second ANNOUNCED visit.
Tupperware- if you want to take things from the dining hall
Snacks- We have Durfee’s on old campus but they mark stuff up (although you can flex or bursar purchases) but keeping some Easy Mac or Ramen near by doesn’t hurt

Swiffer/Vacuum- Life gets dirty.
Wet wipes- see above
Febreeze- To eliminate all those funky odors and possibly delay laundry for another week.
Detergent and dryer sheets- The two laundry rooms on OC (basements of Farnum and Bingham) have generic detergent, but it’s an addt $.50 per load. It doesn’t make your clothes smell powdery fresh and leave them starchy. I’m fairly certain they use the same detergent prisons use…
Laundry hamper- You’ll have to carry laundry outside
Shower caddy- It’s nice to have your stuff separated out from your suitemates.
Toiletries- common sense.

Very helpful, rampant. Thank you.

Great list rampant. You are definitely helping out a lot of freshman. Thanks a lot!
