so if any upperclassman, or person who somehow knows can tell me this, I'd much appreciate it. What exactly should we be bringing? No, I don't mean whether the lava lamp or the table one, I still can't seem to find what each dorm room comes with...I know we get bed+desk+closet, I'm guessing I should bring my own shelves? (off chance it varies by college, I'm in Stiles) Also, what are "must brings" for college, and what will I basically never use? Anecdotes would be nice, any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Trawl through the Yale parents thread. Good info there. Unless you’re driving, I wouldn’t bring shelving. I’d see the layout of the room and what your roommates have and then decide from there.

Depends on your lifestyle really… You’ll need basic stuff like cloth hangers, lamps, bedding. But after the basics, it’s all up to you. You’ll want to consider bringing posters and other decorative items, but don’t bring too many heavy stuff or it’ll be a hassle to move in and out.

I had a clothing iron, but many of my roommates didn’t. My roommate next year will have an entire drum set…

Ask your FroCo!

You’ll probably have shelves in Lawrance. One of those fold-out shelve things for clothes that hang down from closet bars would probably be useful.

Anything you don’t use at home, don’t bring to college. My father insisted on giving me an iron, which I forgot I had until I moved out.

My experience was that I brought WAY too much stuff. Don’t bring too much stuff. If you don’t think you’ll use it, don’t bring it. This applies ESPECIALLY TO BOOKS. So many Yalies are book nerds and think “I can’t live without my ten favorite books by my bedside!”, but TRUST ME. They are heavy to carry up those stairs and you will NEVER touch them. On the off chance you really have the time and desire to read Harry Potter again, you can find it somewhere in the library.
