On the CA there’s only 10 spots for ec’s. My school has a lot of clubs, but most of them are inactive and don’t interest me. Will it look like I’m padding my ec since I’m founder and president of three clubs(unicef-10th,model un-11th, and quiz bowl-11th)? Also i recently founded a nonprofit. Since i started the organization so late in high school will it raise eyebrows?
bump
Yeah, it looks silly unless it is part of a bigger picture.
What was your favorite role in Model UN?
@JustOneDad Chief of Staff…i like being in charge haha. Anyways, should i not include one of them, two of them, all of them? Also should i just not list my nonprofit? I thought even though its started late it would still look good(trust me that isn’t the reason i started it). The nonprofit is part of a bigger picture. In short, I’m aiming to help educate the relatively poor kids in my community at church, during the summer, etc. It branches through 12/34 churches in my city and we’re still expanding!
Also does having an unpaid internship in a biosciences lab at UF count as an ec?
Same
Well, I was thinking more of which country and why, but to follow up on that, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, Obama and Thatcher have all been “in charge” in one way or another.
@JustOneDad Ohh haha sorry probably the UK because I get to research and learn so much more than U.S history and culture and I get a broader view away from western ideals.
You consider the UK to be “away from Western ideals”?
@JustOneDad I guess i mean more “american ideals” a lot of things are very similar between us, but while I’m preparing for meetings I really like to obviously get a background of the country before I speak on its behalf, and it’s good to see things from another country’s prospective and motives(ex:people who influenced the country like churchill) is was I meant to say.
Sorry, I’m not feeling it.
Tell me about what Quiz Bowl does for you. Or, what you do for it.
@JustOneDad Quiz Bowl was started by someone else last year in my school, but me and a friend revived it. We competed but didn’t make it past regionals. I’m guessing this one isn’t worth adding? I’m pretty sure I’ll add unicef for sure though
I can tell you about UNICEF though. I started the club about a year and a half ago. We do fundraisers and fun events to help raise money that we send over to UNICEF. They use the money for tragedy relief, etc much like the red cross. We’ve linked up with habitat for humanity a few times and built houses in local neighborhoods. It’s probably my favorite club activity wise.
Do you see what I’m getting at? Are these things part of you or just something you signed up for because you thought you needed them for college apps?
@JustOneDad Yeah i do, but all my ec’s i sign up for are because i like doing them. I may not report all of them because some of them aren’t as impressive as others, but I don’t sign up for clubs I don’t enjoy.
Why do you enjoy them?
I enjoy my nonprofit and Unicef because I get to help people and have a direct influence on the education and relief of students who need help, while having fun at the same time. I enjoy model un because it gives me different a insight on each country Im assigned and leads me to further involvement in politics so that when I do pursue a career in medicine, I can be well rounded. I like quiz bowl because I frankly just enjoy trivia. I get to hang out with my friends while we study and being captain instills a pretty nice sense of confidence in me. I didn’t name fbla , hosa , or band because I’m not founder or president(vp of fbla since 10th)of them, but I enjoy those because I love competition and music has always been a huge passion of mine and to be able to influence others with my music and ideas in fbla and hosa is really gratifying. I’m not sure if there’s a place in the common app to put this stuff, but there’s a reason behind each ec that I do and none of them are solely there to get into a good college.
^^ @JustOneDad
Joining hs activities is just one expectation.
Adcoms are looking for your impact, judgment, commitment, and more. In and out of school. The filter you need to consider isn’t just passion, enjoyment, or the title you had. It’s also what those ECs represent about you. Think about it. And I hope you have local comm service.
Make sure you know what your target colleges look for.
@lookingforward i have about 150 hours at the hospital now and I’m planning on getting about 300 over the summer. I see what you mean about the ec’s so i’ll think about it!
