Paid deposit at Purdue but going somewhere else

Hi I got admitted to purdue and accepted the offer by paying 500 dollar deposit because I thought I had no chance of getting into no 1 choice.
But I did get in…
I was wondering if I should call or email Purdue that I decided to go to another college and that I don’t care about 500 dollar deposit?

Contacting Purdue won’t do anything - enrollment deposits at all schools are non-refundable.

This is a reminder to all students - you have until May 1, in most cases. There is no rush. Get all of your results and make a decision.

If you have committed and deposited elsewhere, contact Purdue. You will almost certainly lose your $500.

For anyone else reading the thread, this is a good reminder that

  1. you do not need to make a decision and pay a deposit until May 1.
  2. When you do make a decision, let the other schools know that you are declining.
  3. Everyone admitted off the WL post May 1 will forfeit a deposit. This situation is common later in the process.

Yeah I am not looking to get a refund but does double depositing cause rescinding

I honestly don’t care about 500 dollar deposit I put in. I will be fine losing the money. But would they contact my first choice school about this

It’s interesting that you said should I call them and tell them I don’t care about the money.

Odd way of saying things.

@RichInPitt some schools “force” you to deposit by not allowing a housing assignment til you deposit. There’s so much unfair gaming. No clue if Purdue works that way.

OP - nothing to do - you can withdraw - or you can wait just in case you have another mind change.

I would wait…

Ok thanks I will wait until late march to make my final decision and if I decide to go to other school, I will call them and withdraw.

no - at this point, wait until May 1 - why are you rushed? That cost you $500.

Did you deposit to apply for housing? Or just for sake of deposit?

Are you going to tell us what it is?

It’s my understanding that you can’t double deposit as that can cause problems, but wait until you 100% know where you want to go if it’s not Purdue and then withdraw your housing deposit. As long as you don’t have two active deposits, you’re good.

I applied to Alabama for example and I was forced to do a housing deposit because I needed to do so by February 1st if I wanted to be in the first round of housing selection (Aka if you want decent housing) but I think I’m going somewhere else now. So what I’m doing is waiting until I 100% know I’m not going to Bama, and then before I deposit at my other school I will withdraw from Bama. They can’t force you to go at this point. And they don’t have to know you’re going to a regular school. For all they know, you could have decided today you wanted to join the military instead of going to college. Or maybe you are taking a gap year. They won’t come after you for this.

Many kids double and triple deposit. The schools won’t know.

The only reason to deposit early short of 100% knowing you are going somewhere (such as ED) - is if you are forced to for housing like you said…that’s why at many schools, the May thing is a sham…well unless you want the worst dorm room on campus.

But yes, no reason to take any action until at least May 1 - and I don’t buy the- it’s more fair for kids to do so now so others on the waiting list can get in - because most schools don’t tap the waiting list until after May 1 and schools have declines already built into their models.

We housing (but not attendance) deposited at 3 schools - because schools like UF allow you to do so at time of application - another money grab.

When you go out to eat a $100 steak, you don’t want to be rushed and out the door in 30 minutes.

Well this is much more than a $100 steak - why rush your decision.

You say you don’t care about the 5 - hundy. I’m guessing your parents do though.

But if no one does, can you venmo me some $$$.

I did the same thing with S20 and he ended up attending a different college. At many colleges, the student has to pay a deposit to get a housing assignment, and delaying that may result in no (or bad) freshman housing. We lost our deposit too and I was 100% okay with that.

The only surprise is although we officially notified the first school, we continue to receive emails directed at current students. “Welcome to your second year!” or “Get ready for Spring Break!”. No bills or things like that personally directed at us. Just the random email blast to current students.

Congratulations on getting into your first choice!

That I get. It’s obscene but many schools do it making May 1 a sham.

Hang tight in case you are apt to change again.

No reason to withdraw since u paid until you are 100% certain going elsewhere. No one is forcing u to withdraw.
