At Admit Day, several students (who worked for and with the Admissions office) talked about all the opportunities for students to get internships - sometimes for class credit and sometimes for pay. If paid internships really are available, this could help make Rice more affordable for us. Does anyone have any experience or other info to share regarding paid internships (for engineering and science majors)? Can students truly use paid internships to help pay some of the costs of attending Rice?

I also need the answer to this.

Thais is the whole point of work study. Earnings from research at Rice or a campus job are to be used for educational expenses.

Even if you are not FWS, you can get a campus job or work for a professor/department and get paid. Just ask after a class or during O-Week

Leadership Rice also has paid summer internships, but I think most of the money needs to be used to support the student during the internships (housing, food). Look up Leadership Rice on the Rice website for more information.

I have a son who works on campus. The amount of money he makes really can’t go any further than spending and book money. It isn’t enough to defray tuition or room/board.

I think the best resource to make enough money to help defray college costs would be to come home during summers and work somewhere full time.

[Baker Institute Intern Program](http://www.rice.edu/energy/about/intern.html)
Baker Institute, Rice’s highly respected think tank, offers selective summer internships that more than cover summer expenses and leave plenty of spending money – as does Leadership Rice, another terrificl program. My son’s suitemate, a junior, and a chem engineer, will be earning more than 15K this summer working for a consultancy firm. My son’s research jobs on campus (social sciences) have covered all his books, misc. expenses etc. since freshman year.

Wow, $15,000 for a summer job? That’s like earning $60,000 a year. Rice Leadership doesn’t pay anything near that. My son is looking at about half his stipend going towards housing for the 9 weeks in DC. Adding in the rest of his living expenses and the non-campus wardrobe he’ll need, there won’t be much left at the end of the 9 weeks. Still an awesome experience for him.

10-15k is not unusual for a chemE summer job. It really depends on the company and where they toss you.

My job with the University and the Housing Department coupled with my summer earnings paid for the majority of the remainder that Rice was not covering.

Thanks all for the info. If she can make enough to cover the “extras,” and maybe save even a few thousand to put towards tuition each year, that would be a help. I would love to see her take part in some of the other programs you all have mentioned, and if she can do that without costing me extra money (and maybe even save a little from those programs), that would be great.

BrooklyninOh,

Congrats on your son’s getting into the program! My son had a great DC summer internship through Leadership Rice!
