Painting/Art portfolio in admissions process

I paint both at my as a class and independently at home - I'm not world-class or anything, but my stuff is pretty good, and improves consistently. Would I be able to send a portfolio to colleges when I apply? Would it help?

Some colleges–or programs within colleges–may require a portfolio. If so, then you must read and follow all submission instructions, of course.

But if you aren’t planning to be an art major (or are applying to colleges and programs that don’t demand a portfolio) you still may be able to use yours to enhance your admissions odds. If you are applying to Common App colleges, be sure to submit the optional Arts supplement. You’ll find it here https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/docs/downloadforms/Art_Supplement.pdf</a>

Even if you’re not applying to Common App schools, this supplement offers some helpful guidelines that can show you what to submit when your send unsolicited materials to other colleges.

But do read all colleges’ instructions carefully. Even those that don’t expect you to send arts supplements may provide specific details for those who do.

One other suggestion: If you can get to a National Portfolio Day, then you can have your portfolio evaluated for free (and no appointment needed) by experts from a range of colleges. Even if you don’t plan to major in art and won’t be attending any of the colleges present, this is a great way to get objective feedback on your artwork before you ship it off to colleges. You can see if your idea of “pretty good” meshes with what the pros think.
