We had white cabinets in a previous kitchen when living in NYC. The island and pantry cabinets were light gray.
We want to have ourās painted too, so Iāve been pinning pics for 4 months. This isnāt our house, but a couple people posted these on our local FB page in response to a request for pics of painted cabinets.
thumper1 - agree on samples - and if you can get those bigger ones (on a clear plastic) even better. Shades are so tricky. We had the cabinet boxes in my parentsā house painted white to go with the new white quartz counter (color recommended by counter guy). Had to entirely repaint as new paint +had a cream undertone and the quartz was cool. Ended up with Sherwin Williams Pure White - in the ācabinet paintā - I think once you get the special cabinet paint the finish is a certain type (i.e., donāt have to choose matte or satin).
Also would add (you may already be planning) - even if though you are getting a professional to paint (and presumably will be sanding) - if you do a very extensive clean/degrease yourself with strong grease-cutter (e.g., TSP substitute) it will really help with the prep. I read somewhere that sanding onto grease/oil deposits will just drive it into the wood. Iām sure yours are in much better shape than the 1980s cabinets we were working with! That said, weāll be doing the same super-clean on our own cabinets soon, before painting them.
Good to know about the cabinet paint. That is what was in the estimate.
Our granite is variable in color (see post upstream). I think it can handle lots of choices.
I always think working in a paint store is even worse due to customer expectations than a hairdresser. We sometimes expect to help us and know what is going on inside our mindsā¦.
āI want my hair to look blank and blank. Do what you think is best.ā
āIām want a white but not TOO white - what color do you think I should use?!ā
Poor customer service people!!!
(My comment NOT directed at anyone in this thread - just an overall observation of many of our threads!!!)
abasket - agree visual fields are tough! Iāve learned to bring a few photos to my hairstylist and also did that w/a photographer I worked with recently. Soooo much better than trying to use words to convey an image!
We redid our kitchen last year. New white cabinets with a gray glaze. I wanted new vinyl plank flooring but we kept our oak flooring. Looks great. Iāll take a picture tomorrow.
Thank youā¦.another thoughtā¦
You can do as little or as much glaze as you like. Depending on where you live you might be able to work with the Amish to do the work. Their craftsmanship is top notch.
Not a kitchen but we have oak floors on the first floor and I just had this vanity installed in the fall (in my awkwardly shaped powder room). The vanity is Kemper brandās Dover finish, not really a gray and not a beige but in the middle. It is reflecting a bit of the green wall paint but I tried to show what it looks like against the oak floor.
Iām totally sure that either grey or white will look fine with my oak floors. If I Go with greyā¦it needs to be the right grey. Might go totally white.
I need to be careful of anything beige as my appliances are all white, and thatās not changing.
You can find thousands of photos of kitchen cabinets on Houzz. Good luck with the project. Have fun with it!
We had our kitchen cabinets painted this summer and are so, so happy with them. We went with Sherwin Williams Pure White for the cabinets, and Gauntlet Gray for the island. Very happy with the choice to do white on the cabinets and the island gray. Sherwin Williams Emerald paint in Semigloss. Definitely take your countertop color, backsplash color and floor color into consideration (wall color is an easy change).
An advantage of the whiteā¦we are getting some cracking in the paint seams of the cabinet inlays, (not unexpected with the age of the cabinets), and it is a super easy fix with white caulk.
And Kitty provides a lovely black contrast!
You could always get a couple of small cans of paint. Paint one cabinet with each and see what you like before you commit. For us, the glaze was a nice compromise to contrast white with other colors.
I couldnāt do it - in early 2020 (finished a month before the Covid lockdowns) I was redoing my kitchen. I had chosen a gray solid countertop was going to do white uppers and dark gray lower cabinets. But I couldnāt pull the trigger. Something was nagging at me. I felt sad about making the change (I loved my kitchen). I talked with an interior designer friend and my D (the artist) and both said I wasnāt picking the colors for āmeā but was using all the colors Iād seen on every HGTV show Iād seen over the previous 2 years. I was given a āhomeworkā assignment - go around my house and make note of every major color I saw - that would determine what I was attracted to enough to surround myself with. The final, which I adore(!) - mid-mod yellow uppers, vintage green lowers and to āanchorā the space and calm it the gray countertop which was the reason for the change(I was sick of grout cleaning after 20 years!) - I had the cabinets professionally painted. I had the backsplash changed while I was at it as well as new appliances (dumped the dishwasher which I hadnāt used in 12 years).
I literally smile every-time(!!) I walk into or near my kitchen.
Donāt be afraid of color! To quote my D āitās only as permanent as you want it to beā
lov the countertop, is it quartz? If so, would you mind sharing which one?
Thanks - I love it too! It is quartzā¦ LG Viatera Rococo.
