Painting kitchen cabinets!

No resale. This is purely for our enjoyment and to get the oak cabinets gone. I’m leaning toward plain white. I need to check out pulls…I’m not changing the cabinet hinges…so need to find an antique brass or something.

We just want the cabinets to NOT be oak color anymore.

Re: wall art….actually my kitchen and breakfast rooms have no walls for wall art other than under the cabinets.

Agree with @deb922. An off-white color can look “dirty” next to pure white appliances.

Our whole plan of painting our cabinets got shot to h#ll yesterday. We had a new fridge installed a week ago and after discovering a small puddle over the weekend found our they hadn’t tightened the water line. It was leaking for 7 days; water traveled wall to wall and under the new wood floors and cabinets and there was 2" of water in that part of the crawl space. Servpro is here demoing my entire kitchen :sob:

I wish there was an emoji for “pain in the butt.”
Somehow, “pita” ( :flatbread:) does not do it. So sorry you have to deal with this. It is a royal pita as is, and double the pain in the times of Covid.

OMG this is an awful situation.

That’s awful. I feel your pain - similar thing happened to us during the freak Texas snowstorm last February. Supercold water coming into the back of the fridge from an attic line cracked a plastic fitting, causing a slow, steady drip behind the fridge that seeped through the wood and slowly soaked the subflooring before we even realized it. Only discovered days later when our neighbor alerted us that water was trickling off the edge of our foundation. Take as many pictures as possible and don’t be afraid to ask for a second adjuster from your insurer - our adjuster was young and inexperienced, and we later discovered that others in our area with the same insurance carrier but different adjusters got far more insurance money than we ever did.

Wow, sorry to hear that! We had a lake house that had a walk out basement. I had the whole room faux finished in a rustic, west Texas look (it was in west Texas haha), bought a beautiful pool table and other furniture. Got a call weeks after completion that water was running out of our front door. A leak in the bathroom drained down to the basement, completely saturating the walls, furniture, etc.

It sure seemed like a disaster at the time.

Hang in there! I hope the rehab doesn’t take too long and doesn’t drive you crazy!

Current state of the kitchen; they just informed me since we have continuous flooring through the house (no thresholds between rooms) they may have to rip up our brand new floor through the whole house :exploding_head::sob::sob: righty tighty people!!! Emotional damage :joy:

I know this doesn’t deal with the trauma and headache of all of this, but, as noted above, document the heck out of everything. Make sure your insurance company and the appliance installer/plumber are held fully accountable for EVERYTHING, including full remediation, hotel stays while the work is going on, meals (since you can’t cook). Go long and wide on this. The appliance company/plumber also has insurance. Check with your insurance company on this.

Also, get your own estimates for a complete repair (perhaps get 2 or 3 from a highly reputed contractor who will handle the entire fix for you…even if you don’t or can’t use them, at least you will know the costs so the insurance settlement doesn’t shortchange you). While it may not be much solace now, perhaps you can even get all your cabinets (top and bottom) the way you wanted it.

I am terribly sorry about this and wish you the best of luck in getting this fixed soon.

Ouch! One of the reasons I’ve always been reluctant to have a fridge that made ice. (Though mostly it’s lack of interest in ice and being a cheapskate!) So sorry.

Honestly, I think the best thing you could do right now is to locate your nearest Residence Inn and see about checking in. They are exceptional at working with insurance companies, have very spacious rooms with kitchens and all you’ll need to make (easy) meals (I had a 6 week stay once due to a van driving through my garage into the hallway - so much damage, but by not being here, my stress was minimal, and the house was able to be fixed, better than new). By getting out of the house the workers can move around easier, you don’t have to deal with dust, fumes, and more. And yes, document, document, document!

Will insurance pay for a whole hew kitchen? That’s what happened at my neighbor’s house.

Servepro thinks they will, since 2/3 of the lower cabinets have water damage. They were good dove tail wood cabinets, which is why we wanted to keep and paint or stain them. Our insurance company will go after the appliance company; hopefully they cooperate :crossed_fingers:

Well…I guess I won’t get to see your painted cabinets🙄

We just had an estimator over to give us a quote to repaint the cabinets white. Currently off white- “tuscan” feel to existing kitchen. Anyone do an island and/or wine bar in dark navy with rest of kitchen cabinets white?

They may not have a choice!

Keep the pressure on BOTH, and DO NOT sign anything until you are completely comfortable with all the terms of the settlement.

Also, maybe you will be pleased with your new kitchen to make up for all the grief. Worst case: even if they won’t replace the top shelves (but it’s possible they could), perhaps you can get matching doors to go with your new bottom shelves. This could work out very well if you can get a cabinet maker to do it all for you as part of the insurance proceeds.

Good luck!

Servepro thinks they’ll have to replace upper as well since 2 were combo floor/uppers. They had to saw them in half :grimacing:

I’m sorry. Had the same thing happen with a dishwasher. Had to rip out just about everything. They left the old linoleum down under the wood floors so the water just flowed.

Then we made the mistake of letting a big box retailer install our new wood floors. Had them ripped out again because of bad installation.

Good luck.

I created a new thread so we can re-focus on painting cabinets
