Paintings considered a hook?

I've been wondering, could my art serve as a hook for admissions to top colleges? My gpa by the end of junior will be only a 3.0(horrible) and I haven't taken the SAT yet. Btw I'm also a URM.
Here are some of my paintings:

They’re not a hoook unless you’re like picasso.

However some schools do allow art supplements. (Not necessarily enough for tiptopcolleges)

Top colleges? What’s your def’n? With a 3.0GPA, your odds are tough at any top 100 college.

Even taking in account other aspects like tests, teacher recs, or the essay?

They’ll be useful if you’re applying to be an art major. (And they really are pretty good.) Art majors in certain colleges are graded much more on their portfolio rather than their grades and test scores. But a hook? No. The only time paintings will be a hook is if they’re by Van Gogh and donated to the school’s art museum.

I think your art shows that you are a good artist. But those aren’t going to somehow “offset” your 3.0 GPA for a top school (I am defining top as in top 50 or top 100). Unless your SAT scores are in the top 2%…Choose a school where you get to be a successful student, not one where you would be struggling just to keep up. And choosing a school where you can be successful academically will undoubtedly leave you enough time to still focus on your art.

Are you looking for an art school? You didn’t specify what you are looking for…RISD might work for you. Otherwise, probably not…there are a lot of talented artists applying to college. It’s kind of early to know what your GPA will be at the end of the year- any chance you could bring this up? And then add a great first semester senior year? Are you doing serious prep for your SAT/ACT? That would certainly help…

Loved your work! It is evocative and it looks like you have some training as well as talent?

Above post is right on ^ there is not enough info to know how to help you. Please tell more, like are you in an art school? Is your HS competitive? A 3.0 UW at a competitive HS might mean more. Have you taken APs, and if so how many, what scores? What are your SATs? Are you looking to go to art school, a university, or a liberal arts college? How much does your family have available for costs?

Thanks! I’m definitely doing a lot of prep for the SAT and my scores are improving as I go on, according to the practice test I’ve taken. I go to a visual arts school that’s 9th in Maryland, I’m taking APUSH right now and I plan on taken 4 more AP’s next year, and I really want to go to a university rather than an art school mainly because I want more diversity pertaining to majors.

Hmm, to some extent, I think your art could serve as a hook! Have you gotten any awards/major recognition, or had your work displayed in a gallery?

A girl from my high school last year got into one of HYP with only around a 1900 SAT and a 3.65 UW, but an amazing arts supplement (she was also some sort of nationally recognized dancer or singer, though)

I think if you do really well on your SATs, it could /somewhat/ mitigate your GPA, especially if you go to a competitive high school. I’m still not sure it would put you in the ballpark for top 50 schools, but I think you could definitely have a shot at larger state schools like UA, UO, etc.

Good luck!

Search for some of the threads in the Parent’s forum on good schools for B students. There are some great schools there you can learn about.

I’ve definitely been looking at the A colleges for B students. Any chance at Syracuse?

Yes Syracuse is possible, certainly not a sure thing but possible. Art supplements can help “paint the picture” ( ha pun intends) of a well rounded student, it shows that u have added value and can help but will not make up for the rest unless applying as an art student.
