SM

Did anyone else got in?
I heard that Omar Aftab from LGS got into most of the Ivies plus MIT/Caltech/

rejected Stanford

He has also done some serious Quantum/relativity theory propsition...

hey youy all

senior..considering going to pk to pursue medicine at dow medical college or smc..yet also considering on goign to uiuc..yet not sure..
doign medicine from pk..4 years of time SAVED..while here as an undergrad i would still be doing required courses like ENG ..there..i would be far ahead in learning PRE MED COURSES..There we go...5 years straight to use..and USMLE>.there residency..while other fellas stillin US MEd schools

comments ......

I'm from Kashmir, so can i join the thread?

eVEryone's welcome!
Which city are you from?

DELL- saving the four years is worth it if you get into somewhere like Agha Khan, KE, Allama Iqbal Medical College, Dow wouldnt have been my top priority, still its upto you. Better call up some relative who did his med from PAKistan in the recent years and is working in US.

dow is the best gov college in PK..so u sure going to PK is not a bad idea? i mean over here, it's tentative..4 years of undergrad..yet future still uncertain..there..jsut main focus..USMLES right from the first day of college..
Aga Khan is the best private college, yet hard to get into as well..

hey there is one: i do my undergrad from here..if i do not get a good MCAT score (like say 24), i could go to AKU then, and the minimum there is a 24. SO should i give it a shot here or go to PAK this summer ?

also..if i dont get into one of the schools like dow or smc.. i would be literally doomed since i would be in PK and my matriculation in a US university would be cancelled since i have applied for the fall term...that means that the fall 06 term would be squandered as i would not be in school, in PK(if i dont get admitted) nor in US since i would be in PK to waiting to hear the optimal news of my admission in med school..

now what should i do?

i dont mean to be rude in making this digression, but i feel its, important...
after the events and decisions in the last month or so, i am seriously considering not to apply to US universities...why??? let me answer...

Ok, everyone know what sort of applicant pool there is and the usual places where ppl apply to: the ivies, some top notch schools and a few safeties, but i was thinking of applying to the top ones until i got these shocks with the decisions of different universities...

the idea is not to malign the admitted students but to seek an explanation for all those 'more-worthy' students who failed to get admitted...

The admitted ppl most certainly varied on achievements...most 'deserved' it like Omar Aftab, Saba Zaidi (both MIT), then we had Fahad Mehmood (stanford, duke) etc...but there were others as well...

for example...there was this guy from KGS, who got a 1990 on SAT 1, not great ECs+ 3rd round of Natinal Physics Contest...and some minor things...and he got into Cornell and a few others....and then there was a friend who got a 2360 on Sat1, many Ecs, and again the 3rd round of national maths olympiad and he only got waitlisted from Middlebury...
why the difference????
One might say the ESSAYS!!! but i have read both the essays, and that of the first guy was crap to say the least ( i wont reproduce it for the sake of privacy) and that of my frined was much better...

Here is what he wrote at an orkut community:
"see, i have officially reached a conclusion regarding US universities:

(1) All Ivies are overrated.
(2) SAT scores, essays and Grades dont matter if u r prepared to pay full fees.
(3) Doesnt matter how smart or dumb u r, the selection process is carried out by randomly picking names from a hat; lottery style.
(4) USA sucks and so do its universities.

Rejected from Harvard, Yale, Penn and Williams. Awaiting offers from Middlebury, Chicago, Toronto and Waterloo. Accepted at Babson (a college that incidentally happens to be ranked 1st in USNEWS rankings in Business Honours Entrepreneurship), even though i didnt apply there."

Of course part of it was from disappointment, but part of it was true to say the least...especially in the case of 'lottery' wrt to what has happened these days...

there are many other cases as well, including one in which an 1840 SAT girl with six world records ( MCP crap, she got from her father's institute) got accepted into MIT, but a person with five worl recs got rejected despite a much better SAT, and other awards including national ones and plenty of ECs plus one in which he helped establish MIT labs in underdeveloped areas

the thing is not to discourage anyone but again seek a plausible explanation of all these thing especially wrt the Babson College thing...

Thank u all

unpredicatable. that is what the US admissions are. my advice is: do apply, but don't expect too much or depend on getting in. if you do get in with aid, that's great. if you don't, life goes on and atleast you know that you tried. and most importantly, do not let your studies suffer because off the whole admissions process (SATs, essays etc.).

The admission game is getting more unpredictable every year. This year was the worst year for International Students (specially from India). Even the All India ICSE (examination board like the O Level) topper was denied admission to all the US Universities he applied, even though his SATs were high. His extra curricular accomplishments were great too.

Hi, I am from Islamabad, Pakistan.

so where all you all going to college?

I am going to Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA

where are u all headed?

jaw007, i only have one piece of advice for you:

stop fussing over other people's applications and focus on your own. i may sound a little blunt here, but you're really insensitive about the whole process (in using words like MCP "crap", a really awful and irrelevant comparison of other applicant's profiles and such)...if you're so bent on believing that US college admission process is a load of crap, you're sure welcome to study in Pakistan (not an option, is it?).

No wonder there's little hope for a country like Pakistan...
