paper app or online app

which application seems to be a preference for adcoms.

there is no preference - online ends up being much easier for people to complete.

Most schools are expressing a strong preference for online apps (I can't say for sure that JHU is). Some have discontinued printing paper apps. Some charge a lower (or no) fee if the online app is used. I noticed a big "sea change" between 2005 and 2006 in this regard. I think (jmho) that the paper app will shortly be a dinosaur.

The paper app at most schools will always be an option since there are still many people who do not have access to computers or internet access.

also many colleges and universities will waive the application fee if you do it online. i forgot if i had to for hopkins but many colleges will.

At Hopkins we have absolutely no preference if you apply online or via a paper application. Just like we don't care if you apply with the JHU application or the common application. In the end, all the methods to apply are reviewed exactly the same way. Choose which ever methods works best for you.

Yes, other schools do favor online applications and even provide application fee discounts - WE DO NOT.
