My mother goes on another forums and when I came home today, she told me that because my Verbal SAT score is below average for UCB and UCLA (about 20 pts for cal, and 10 pts for la), I’m going to be automatically rejected!
My first instinct was to register for the Dec SAT and retake, but then I doubt I can improve…
So I started arguing with my mother that AVERAGE means that 50% of the admitted students score around that point. But then she said that if I’m rejected, I won’t be able to appeal with my SAT scores.
I’m so paranoid right now, can someone confirm/reject the above statements?

Thanks!!

oh, if it helps, my score is 640V800M680W (2120).

You won't be automatically rejected from Cal + UCLA if you're below the average. I mean, take a look at the word, if you have an average, that means you have a spread of data, with some higher and some lower.

By the way, your SAT score is not below average. I'm at Berkeley and I've met some people with scores lower than 1900. If you're really bothered by it, send your scores now. Take it again, if it's higher, then send it again. It doesn't really matter, since UC's only take the highest anyway. I truly think it's a waste of time to be studying for the SAT when you should be spending this time on your essay. Cal and UCLA admissions are not driven by simple points, you need more than that to get by. Your SAT's are above average, and you should be working on your essay to set yourself apart from others.

amismartenough: ARE YOU SERIOUS??????? My school's average SAT score is probably 2200, and has 30-or so valedictorians......
great, i won't hope for cal/LA anymore....

Stop ****ing worrying about it so damn much. Your stats look good enough to get you into a great college whether it's Berk, LA, or some other university.

You're only driving yourself nuts by overthinking these statistics and theories; just take the SATs over again if you're so worried and be done with it. You can't do anything else about your SATs at this point, anyway, so calm down and enjoy what you have left of your diminishing senior year.

suggest you and mom search on 'comprehensive review' at the UC websites. Not sure what she was looking at, but there is no one indicator (gpa, test scores, ecs, essays) that is an automatic in (or out) for CAL and UCLA.

CAL has been doing comprehensive review for several years, and UCLA just announced that they are moving to it for this year.

You're worrying way too much. As far as I know, your SAT score is fine. I know plenty of people who got into LA/Cal with your score (and even lower too). I think you'll be fine. Have confidence in yourself and just relax and enjoy your senior year.
