School starts on a Thursday and I don't have any Thursday classes....
On my writing instructor's site, it says we have to show up on the first day class meeting or we get dropped. (It's a MW class). But I don't have to attend any classes that day right...

If you don’t have Thursday classes then there’s nothing to attend anyway right?

You can’t really show up for the first day of class if the class isn’t on Thursday.

Kind of on topic-

They say that the first class is always the lecture. If the lecture starts after the discussion, that means we don’t go to the first discussion right?

I am really confused on when school even starts. Some people are saying it’s the following monday because some people have discussions and everything first thing on thursday, but some people say it’s the 24th. But welcome week continues on until friday, so idk. =/

lolol i feel relieved that i’m not the only one thats confused + paranoid XD perhaps an upperclassman can shed some light on the subject for us?

as for me, i think i don’t have to go to school till 3 30 and go to just 1 class on thursday haha

I heard that the first meeting should always be a lecture. I only have discussions on thursday so I have the whole day off! w00t!

To clarify things: Classes start on THURSDAY! If your professor/TA does not email you saying you don’t have to go to class, you have to go to class that day. Whatever classes you have on Thursday, you go to them unless otherwise stated by your professor. If you so conveniently happen to not have any classes on Thursday, then you have an extra free day to do whatever you want. Hope that helps with the confusion/paranoia!

So if we only have discussions and no lectures on Thursday, do we still have to go to the discussions?

chicken is there something going on on monday as well? if so, what is it / do we have to go?

Most likely discussions will not start until week 2 but this is not 100%! Usually it says on the course website. On that note missing the first discussion before you even go to lecture won’t really matter anyways.
I believe the Freshman convocation is on Monday? I think it was last year. If you live on campus they will take you too it, otherwise you can look at the calendar here for welcome week. [Welcome Week](http://search.dos.uci.edu/welcomeweek/calendar.php)

chicken is there something going on on monday as well? if so, what is it / do we have to go?

There is a Freshman welcoming by the Dean. You should definitley attend. Don’t worry, the RA of your dorm will help take care of you. Or you can just ask them!

Monday is the Dean’s Welcome and the Anteater Involvement Fair. Go to the fair! There will be hundreds of booths on campus from clubs, sororities and fraternities that our school offers and they are looking for people to join them. Get involved and join them. There’s also a free bbq for you guys too. Monday is a jam-packed day so have fun and enjoy yourselves.

About discussions, if that’s the only class you have that day, most likely you don’t have to go to it. Wait for an email from your professor/TA saying whether or not you are required to go that day.

another paranoid question…is there a good map to find classes? because my class schedule has all of the room numbers but the map on uci.edu doesn’t have all of my classes, like room 1200 for example =/
and will there be like a final class schedule with class room numbers emailed or sent to us or anything?

i believe there’s two different kinds of uci maps on the website, right? maybe try the one that says “MAIN CAMPUS CORE”

[UCI Campus Maps](http://uci.edu/campus_maps.php)

:)

Umm regarding room numbers, if you know what building you’re going to, just run around looking for the actual numbers. I recommend doing that during welcome week so you can adjust and figure out where your classes are. Bring a couple of friends along and run around looking of where your classes are so that on the first day you won’t be lost.

@chargerland this site should help you out <a href=“EEE+ Home | UCI”>EEE+ Home | UCI;

that’s for the building itself though, not the actual classroom. i agree with the above poster… it’s good to find your classes ahead of time. not just the building, but the actual room… sometimes buildings are arranged differently.

Okay so I asked my HA and she told me that I didn’t need to go to class on Thursday since I only have a discussion.

Whew.
That clears it up.
