who does this for fun?!?
what a waste of time that'd be.

I don't think it'd look bad if you parents didnt go to an AMAZING college. Most parents didn't. Plus, they might think that you're very eager to get a better education blahblah based on your background. My parents didn't go anywhere great either. I mean, they lived in China at the time when they banned education!

i just thought that the schools were a bit more egalitarian. personally, i'm sick of rich neighborhoods and the kids who carouse in them, and from what i've heard from my friends who have gone to boarding school, people aren't as ostentatious as at home, and i believe that (though i'm sure there are a few snobs every now and then). i think kids who go to wealthy public schools and local private schools are much more snotty, personally. and i was under the impression that the snobbiness at most boarding school is more about your last name than what car your parents drive. and i'm used to that and it wouldn't bother me. (btw, i'm talking about the top schools, excluding deerfield. namely, andover, exeter, and sps).

i interviewed and the guy really liked me and we had a long discussion.

i do understand it, or atleast i did, but now everyone is saying that wealth is more important that your family history, and i thought that that was the snobbiness everyone was referring to.. i don't think adcoms are too fond of the nouveau riche, to tell you the truth. thats my own personal understanding.

"Have you checked out the faculty degree profile?Look at any of the Ten Schools Headmaster and top Admissions Rep.All Ivy or top eastern education. This is the time to really understand the world that you are trying to join. Also, many of the folks on CC are Legacy's who are pretending to be nervous , uninformed, and are doing this for fun."

This is so true, for example, the headmaster of hotchkiss got his PHD from Yale and so did his wife.. half the faculty had at least a degree from ivies, and many more from top LACs...
and yes
a lot of legacies

Blairt. You are getting it.Read "Harvard Rules".Very boring unless you want to learn about elite education infrastucture. The car you drive is juvenile snobery played out at public highvschools in Dallas .True elitism is the insincere open invitation to apply to a BS that accepts 19% of its applicants. The reward for making it in is trying to change the culture and being a good person.First , you have to grow up and realize that the wolf has had in some cases over 200 years to make his sheeps clothing.

and what do you mean, their invitations are insincere? to me, it seems like the adcoms are very intelligent and well-informed people who don't discriminate against people because they haven't had the opportunity.

and PS, CC was not my source of enlightenment on justice in the world.

blairt, go to a BS and u will see :)
it's the money who rules here.... i wont go to specifics but there are so many cases blatantly shown before the student body

I said "open invitation". Leave the Adcoms out of this, most are professionals doing a nice job.Don't be defensive , but your earlier posts just seemed a bit idealistic. You were asking questions that lead me to believe that you were somewhat blind to elitism. Most of the top tier schools have spent millions marketing the openess of BS.Just do as Ronald Reagan did with the USSR..."trust but verify"

right, but i'm not very susceptible to marketing. i know the people who attend these schools and only once in a while is someone a real snob. every now and then someone makes a comment about all of the money spent on minorities w/ low test scores, but thats it. now everyone here is like not there are steal gates and nobody can get it.. and thats BS. there are many lower class students and a large amount of upper-middle class students.

Nice Reply. You are a great study on CC.Only a few weeks ago your first post read as though you couldn't find St. Pauls on a map.3 weeks later AESD rolls out of your post like you have been around for a couple of years. The real Kitty has probably had her eye on this prize for a long time(maybe grandpa kitty lit the fire).Your ambition is something to be proud of and you are helping the CC community.

" and thats BS. there are many lower class students and a large amount of upper-middle class students."

not true...that's it..this is not college...even AESDCH with the largest endownment(even larger than those of many colleges and top flight universities) have around 30-35% of the people on financial aid..others pay full tuition...

Bearcats. You are correct.I may have upset Blair. She is a bit confused When she uses terms like "lower class" or "middle class".A URM is not lower or middle class example.A southie ( boston inner city white) whose parents make $1mm a year selling aluminum siding is who doesn't get much of a chance at andover. These schools would love to have 97% ssat coal miner kid from WV.Black people are UR regardless of their nationality. If willing and qualified we should get in and add to the school community. The fact that the Legs, celebs and old money take 40% of the slots leaves only 20-25% for the standard high octane unhooked kids who are not URMs.It doesn't mean they hate you, just an age old system.

I don't think the schools care how you made your millions, but they do need to keep accepting the very wealthy to maintain and grow endowments. This is not unlike colleges where there are few slots for the unhooked. The unhooked seeking financial aid need to internalize this. There is a lot of idealism here, I have to keep reminging myself many of you are 13.

prepparent - you mean groton is an example of snobbery and elitism? That's how I've perceived the school, based on the people I've met from there and what the school stresses (along w/ deerfield).

No, they want to know about your parents because they want to know your backround.. what family you come from. A job can mean alot to people....
