Hello, sorry if this is a silly question to ask...
I'm an international freshman who's going to U of Michigan on the 23rd of Aug for early-move in, and my orientation is on the 24th of August. My dad's flying to Michigan with me.

Since I'm in a double room and my roommate won't be arriving till early Sept. for the first week of school, is it possible for my dad to reside in my dorm for a few days? I'm asking this because I haven't booked any hotels yet and it's quite expensive to do so now. If parents are not allowed to live in dorms, can someone please recommend some cheap hotels near the campus?

Thanks a lot!

I’ve never heard of a parent living in the dorms with anyone during their orientation. I would call the housing office and get their opinion.

[Staff Directory | University Housing](<a href=“Michigan Housing”>Staff Directory – Michigan Housing)

That would definitely be extremely weird and your hallmates wouldn’t appreciate it. Plus I doubt it’s allowed by housing. Just have him get a hotel.

Okay I understand that, thanks all.

I would suggest the Microtel Hotel in Ann Arbor, it is one of the more reasonably priced hotels. You can always ask if there is a michigan discount for move-in, The Marriot Courtyard in Ann Arbor I think may be offering disounts if you call the hotel directly and ask for the move-in discount.

Hope this helps

Propsmom - Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check those hotels later! :)

Definitely check with housing. It sounds like you are moving in a lot earlier than most students and if your dad isn’t staying long it might not be an issue. A lot of college kids have weekend vistors (boyfriends, girlfriends or just friends) and most dorms allow the check-out of cots for vistors.
Of course, if you aren’t staying in your housing assignment but instead in a short term orientation location that would probably make it less likely.
Also let us know what your housing location is and we might be able to suggest hotels closer.

duffyzmom - I received an email from UMich about early move-in for intl students, and it states that parents are not allowed to live in dorms… as expected. I’ll be living in South Quad, so I appreciate any suggestion on reasonably-priced hotels around! I just checked Microtel, Marriot Courtyard, Residence Inn, Holiday Inn and Charlet House Victoria Inn, they’re all not available.
