Parent moved out of state-help!

Hi All.

I am in a dilemma. I am filling out my FAFSA and I'm not sure about some things. I live in Ohio, and I do not live with my parents. My parents are divorced, and I lived with my mom growing up and in high school. I have not lived with them about 3 years, and I will not be living with them any time soon. I am considered a dependent because I was not born before Jan. 1, 1986. However, I don't receive any help from my parents, and I have not lived with one more than the other in the past 3 years. In the past when I have filled out my FAFSA I used my mom, because she contributed a little, which is the most of either parents, and I lived with her the most when I lived at home. So, I have to put my parents information on my FAFSA, but my mom has moved to Indiana, I am still living in Ohio and going to school in Ohio. I am just wondering how that will effect my financial aid. I am really worried I won't qualify for Ohio grants and loans because she has moved out of state, while I am still living in state. I was just curious if anyone knew how this is handled with FAFSA, since they know that I am not living with her, and she is not contributing, will they still use her residency as mine and will I qualify for as much aid?

Hopefully this all made sense. Thanks for any help I can get!

You need to visit your financial aid office and ask them how to handle this. You are not the first student to have this situation, so they should have a policy in place already.

Good luck!

Look at the OH residency form, if you did HS there, and still live there and have maintained residency yourself, you should be fine, in most states, so check your state.

Are you a dependent on their tax return or do you file a OH return yourself? With an OH address? That should help.
