Parent PLUS loan eligibility

I’ve gotten my award letter today and I was not awarded for a parent PLUS loan this year.

I was awarded it last year and my mom applied was approved and disbursed of the loan.

The PLUS loan covered my cost of attendance last year, but since I was not awarded this year, I don’t think I’ll be able to pay for my housing. (I’m off-campus)

I’ve requested a PLUS loan off the student loans gov website and my mom was approved. However, I was wondering about the chances of getting the maximum amount requested and if I am able to get the loan at all. Can the school still deny the loan even if my mom was approved? I’m meeting SAP and am eligible for the loan.

Thank you!

The school will allow the Plus loan up to the COA. Did you get more awards this year? Is there a lower COA because you are living off campus (there still should be an allowance for living cost but it may not be as high as a dorm).

Is your mom ok with the burden of paying back all of those Plus loans when you graduate? Or does she expect YOU to pay those back?

I did not get pell grant last year, but I did get it this year.

The COA is the same as last year.

A Parent PLUS loan is not an “award”.

That might be it. Was the Plus loan for about $6000?

@mom2collegekids My mom is ok with paying it after I graduate.

@twoinanddone My PLUS loan last year was about $17k, the amount my mom asked for when she applied was the maximum or $10k.

sounds like the Pell grant is the reason for borrowing less.

Your mom’s income is low enough to qualify for a Pell Grant, and yet she is somehow going to pay back all these loans? It doesn’t sound like she’d be able to afford to pay them back.

Are you going to be a sophomore this year?

The loan will be paid in full by a savings bond left by my dad when he passed away. Yes, I’m going to be a sophomore this year.

Would there be any reason for them to deny the PLUS loan?

no. I don’t think they have the authority to deny the loan that your mom was approved for. As long as there are costs that aren’t covered, your mom can cover them with a Plus Loan.

Did you live on campus last year? If so, maybe that’s the issue.

So sorry to hear about your dad.

Thank you for the help.

I lived on campus last year and I’m living off campus this year, so that might be the reason why it was not offered.

The only thing that worries me is that if the PLUS loan wasn’t in my award package like last year, I will not receive it.

Don’t worry, just send an email to let them know that you applied and were approved the Plus and you would like that processed. Plus loan isn’t an ‘award’, it is a loan you are able to take as long as you are approved. Are you living in off campus accommodation or with your parent? Each circumstance has a different Cost of Attendance, see the college website, sometimes off campus living is the same but cost of living in dorm, but with parent is always much lower. You can only get the loan up to the cost of attendance. So if you aren’t dorming you don’t have the expense of dorming, you see?

@BrownParent Ah I see, thank you!

Another question, do they usually give out the maximum amount?

Just talk to them about what you are eligible for. Or in your email tell them if you want the full amount you are eligible for.

@BrownParent Do you know what eligibility would be based on?

Your approval, plus you having ‘need’.

Need = COA - (EFC + aid)

In otherwords, you have to have qualified costs that aren’t covered.

Plus loan can be up to COA, and used for EFC.
