Parent Plus loans

Have not taken one out previously and have a question. Went to studentloans.gov and see how to log in with my PIN and apply. But when given the choices for year - it says 2013-2014. I want a loan for next year, 2014-2015. I am a little confused as I was able to do FAFSA fior 2014-15 yesterday.

Does anyone know when the Parent Plus loan will be available to apply for next year? When do you typically do this? I want to borrow for the Fall 2014 semester - which is the bill I would have to pay by July 30th.

Any other Parent Plus tips or advice also welcome.

From what I remember, you need to wait till FAFSA is processed and the schools send their offers.

University website directs me to studentloans.gov website to apply and to sign the master promissory note. I guess I’ll contact school to se if they know.

First, the school must certify that you need the funds. The authorization is only good for 60 days so you can’t really apply until mid July, depending on when school starts. My D’s school said I could apply earlier if I wanted to see if I would get approved, but I would have to apply again within the 60 day window. I waited as I was sure my credit was good and did not want the earlier application to effect my credit score.

The school doesn’t pull these funds in July. Once they know you are applying for a plus loan it will show on your bill as “anticipated funds” and they pull the funds in September.

FYI you can apply for the max you think you will need up to the COA minus other aid, then have the school return leftover funds to the Feds. My D got an unexpected scholarship so I am returning about half of what I originally asked for this year.

Okay, that’s interesting. So - too early to do now then.
