3.5 unweighted gpa, 3.9 weighted
My mom somehow has the idea that I can get into harvard/ HYPS and I can't seem to convince her its a lost cause. I have to write all the essays and other application stuff for these colleges I KNOW I CANT GET INTO but she makes me do it.

the most terrifying...whenever I raise these objections she literally says YOLO (face palm) as in I only live once so might as well do these pointless applications just incase.

I have really good ECs and connections to Harvard, but I honestly don't think I will even be weight listed.

Any advice on this?

oops sorry! 2120 (taking it again) Bio Sat 720, US History 740 (Taking 2 more soon)

It seems like a high reach for you because I believe GPA and SAT fall below 25%. Do you have legacy at Harvard, know the dean of admissions really well or just good connections?

My dad spent 20 years there as director of science or something in the medical school (which means nothing) and I’ve got an interview somehow (even though it would happen before I even send in my application, no idea how that’ll work). My god father who died recently was on some board of directors for the past 30 yrs. I’m just super super not happy my parents think I’ll get in even though I know its like a 2% chance. I just want to give them a reality check :L

Maybe show them class profile of Harvard, College app profile, and if you know someone who recently got in compare his EC, numbers with yours. Where do you want to apply ED?

Right now my dean told me a reasonable school for ED would be Uof C, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, or Brown. My friend got in this year but she a lot of superficial stuff, like she was “part of the robotics team” (Only came like 3 times a year), “Fenced varsity” Worst fencer Ive fenced in a while, and she made some bs club for women scientists that no one attended. She had a really good GPA though, 4.2 weighted and probably better test scores. I want to raise my test scores, but I have more meaningful ECs than she had…except Harvard didn’t know hers were all BS. sigh. I just wish my parents would stop

U of Chicago does not have ED it has EA. I actually think you might have a better chance at Harvard SCEA then Brown ED or UChicago EA. It would still be pretty slim though.

:( I just don’t want to waste an early decision on something so slim. My dean said its likely JHU/Cornell…im so conflicted

I think out of the 5 colleges you listed this is your chances getting in Early from strongest to weakest
JHU>Cornell>Harvard>Brown>Chicago
So that comes down to JHU, Cornell, and your parents’ choice Harvard.
The GPA might hurt for all 3 of those schools, what is your class rank?

School doesnt give class rank, nor do they give unweighted GPA. I’ve taken 8 APs which is the most people do (Usual 6-7).

You have 8 AP’s but only have a 3.9? Have you gotten all B- to B?

Your mom said YOLO :)) :)) (That really made my day. I needed a laugh after writing all these essays)

If you don’t want to attend Harvard, then there is no reason for you to do SCEA for a college you’re not interested in. I don’t know where Lacoste got his facts that it would be easier to get into Harvard SCEA than any of the other ones. That just doesn’t make sense. Have you visited any of these schools? Out of JHU, Cornell, UChicago, and Harvard which colleges are you the most interested in (pick two). At the end of the day, you will be the one deciding which school is the best fit for you.

But your GPA may be considered differently, I believe on other posts you said you attend a highly ranked prep school where the grades are deflated or something like that.

This Common Data Set information might help your mom understand:

Harvard admitted student GPA

Percent who had GPA of 3.75 and higher: 91.49%
Percent who had GPA between 3.50 and 3.74: 4.71%
Percent who had GPA between 3.25 and 3.49: 3.08%
The low grades almost certainly belong to students with very high test scores, minorities, recruited athletes, and development cases – like legacies and absurdly rich people.

B+ on 3 of them, A on one, other 4 nxt year. Not allowed to take any Fresh or soph. so really just have 4 under my belt. Tola, I visited JHU and It was okay like I wouldn’t mind going. and DUH!! I would love to go to Harvard it just doesn’t make sense for me to waste my early on it. Cornell is 2nd realistic i guess according to dean. And you can say my moms a cool person :-c ahahaa

@tola2015 I never said Harvard would be the easiest, I said that OP would have a better shot at Harvard SCEA then Chicago EA and Brown ED considering she already got invited to interview and that OP’s dad was a directer of some sort at the Med College.
Also OP never states OP does not want to attend Harvard, OP states that Harvard is out of reach

is it a rare thing to get an interview for harvard or is it just for anyone who applies?

They offer one to all applicants when possible. The alumni network is huge and active.

You are more connected than most kids who apply to Harvard so why not give it a shot?

You would be a fool not to try. You’ve got George W. Bush type connections and a better GPA.
