Parent question

For those that have a child in an academy, I have one question.

I have a son who got LOAs from USMA and USAFA but his nomination is to USNA.

Has anybody had a similar experience?

We were in the same boat with an LOA to AFA, but a nomination to USNA. My dd called her congressional office as they had not given out their nominations yet. They switched her from USNA to AFA, thus giving her the appointment to AFA. She got an LOA from Navy that next week. Are all your nomination sources used yet? If not, your son needs to get on the stick and call his last sources...

thanks for your help. He really wants USNA as he went to summer seminar there and loved it. Getting the nomination switched by the nominating MOC might be easy, but what if USNA accepts him soon. Oh well. Man this is a roller coaster.

MODADKC: last year our son received a nom from our senator for USMMA, and from our congressman for USMA (where he had interviewed for USNA and listed that as his first choice)- he made a call to the congressman, who informed him he had also received a nomination for USNA- somehow that letter never went out- he received it several days later. I would agree that it might serve you well to have your son contact the MOC and inquire.

As for appointments, it was our experience that the USNA was the slowest of the academies to get the letters of appointments out. Best of luck!

Thanks. That was very informative. We did contact one of the remaining sources to try and at least match a nomination with an LOA.

MODADKC: just another thought: if your son has an LOA, then by all means have your son contact his MOC's and make sure they know that-it is our understanding the academies submit a list to the MOC of those candidates with LOA's for the very reason of trying to secure a nomination when a seat is being held in the class. It is our understanding an LOA does not "count" in the number of nominations alloted to the MOC (I could be wrong on this, but worth invesigating if your son has an LOA)- Best of luck!

The LOA does count in the number of nominations, it does not count against the number of appointments a MOC's slate can receive.

If the MOC nominates a slate of 10 candidates for a single vacancy, and 3 have LOA, then an additional candidate will be appointed (providing he/she is qualified) for a total of 4 appointments. Only the appointee without the LOA "counts" against the quota.

thanks for the assistance.

I have a new question. When are the midshipmen allowed to go home for Summer break and for how long? Specifically, right after the plebe year? I now have an engaged daughter and want to start scheduling to make it work for my son to be in the wedding. If there isn't enough to be stressed over!

They won't know until late, as in May for my Mid. He is sitting here and I asked him about this and he said that your mid can put a priority on which training segment he wants, stating specifically that it is necessary to have leave during () block for a wedding, and they are pretty good about honoring those.

Son's idea seems to be that it would be best to go ahead and schedule the wedding, then have the plebe request the appropriate block as the leave block, specifying that the reason is his sister's wedding.

As we learned last year, all bets are off with the training schedule. Ours had Herndon, then summer school, then his training block was changed, so he came home (we bought the ticket from MD to AK on 3 days notice~not to worry, AFB nearby got us $600.00 tickets, then twice on 1 days notice at the same price. Gotta love NW and the active duty military fare!). He was supposed to be home for 3 weeks, left to go back, and when we got home from the airport (!) there was a message that his training had been delayed for 3 weeks. (operational issues-we are at war). Wait, it gets better! Then, when he went back again, the same thing happened, only without the phone call. So, we had him home from June 24 until Aug. 17th last summer. Ahhh. What a break for him! It was such an unexpected joy, especially since Dad and I are teachers and were off the whole time. Just means he'll have to do 2 training sessions this summer. bummer.

Just goes to prove, semper gumby is always the best bet. I say schedule the wedding and that will make it easier for him to request the time rather than vice versa.

momof1, Thanks for the info. Do you think if wedding is anywhere between May 16 through 26 would be late enough for finals to be over? We still don't even know if he will receive the appt but the NROTC schedule seems like it would be considerably more flexible.

Hopefully, our son will hear in the next few weeks from MOC re: Nomination.

This is the schedule page that would be applicable for 2006. May 16 is Sea Trials for Plebes (mandatory), and May 18 is Herndon (The capstone to Plebe Year, my mid says not to miss this, then they get to put on their youngster shoulder boards) and Training Block 1 starts on May 30, so the week of the 22nd is relatively clear. BTW, finals do not mean they are done. They are not released until their LT. signs off on their room, plus they have to move everything out of their rooms, get it stored, etc. So, for 2007, I would say the safest dates would be May 19 thru 28 (Memorial Day). Anyone else want to chime in?

Good luck to your candidate and I applaud your foresight! Happy Wedding Planning!
