What SAT (CR+M and total) and ACT scores do you have?
@ucbalumnus I didn’t take the SAT but I got a 32 composite on the ACT(35E/30M/34R/29S)
So I’m just going to guess that if you can make one of those guaranteed scholarships work, and your app is in to someplace like UA-Huntsville, they may change their tune. If they can’t give up enough control that they must see your draft essays, they will really go crazy at the thought of you going off to a school
across the country that probably isn’t as good as the UCs you could get into. I’d keep going with UC apps, but get a couple of big merit apps in by the deadlines, too.
And for heaven’s sake, grow up and do chores to help your parents. They put a roof over your head, changed your diapers, and you want them to pay for college. You ought to be offering to help, not acting like a spoiled brat.
^^
I agree…send in some apps to schools like UAH and UA, and likely the parents will then decide to pay for UCs or other schools.
Assuming a 3.9 or so GPA and a 32 ACT, http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/ lists automatic full rides at:
Troy
Tuskegee
Alabama State
Arkansas - Monticello (if also top 10% rank)
Howard
Florida A&M
Louisiana Tech
North Carolina Central
Prairie View A&M
There are also automatic full tuition scholarships in that list, but if your parents really will contribute nothing, then you will need a full ride (including room and board) to be able to attend college.
Note: some schools require that ACT scores include the writing component. If you did not do the writing component, you may have to take the ACT with writing or SAT to qualify for admission or scholarships.
It’s sounding more like this is a drama reaction by mom…and dad is following his wife’s lead for marital harmony.
Mom is annoyed that DD was “grade flakey” her first couple of years of high school, and is “chore flakey” at home, so mom sees college as a way to “put the breaks” on DD. Mom has essentially declared that DD doesn’t deserve to have $200k+ spent on her college education because of all the “flakiness”.
My gut tells me that if DD gets her act together, gets top grades, behaves at home (curfews, chores, no smart-mouth, etc), that her parents will end up paying most/all of a UC-like school.
However, just to protect herself, DD needs to apply to a few schools that provide huge merit. Having those in her pocket will also likely inspire her parents to get on board with college costs.
In the meantime…shape up!!!
Re: post #24 - Stats are in Post #4. The GPA is 3.55.
[Florida A&M](Page Not Found) only gives full rides to state residents with OP’s stats. OOS students only get full tuition and fees. OP may want to check these colleges though.

http://www.famu.edu/Scholarships/New_Scholarship%20Criteria%20Flyer_2015-2016%201.pdf lists “A full four-year scholarship that pays for tuition and fees, double-occupancy room rate, and meals” for non-Florida residents with a 3.50 HS GPA and 29 ACT or 1900 SAT score. It is tuition and fees only for non-Florida residents with a 3.50 HS GPA and 27 ACT or 1800 SAT.
Ok, that removes Troy, Tuskegee, and Alabama State from the automatic full rides that the OP can get.
This does not seem like a healthy family relationship when the drama escalates that quickly.
Agreed.
What do you want to study?
@austinmshauri Thanks for that list of colleges, I’ll look into them.
@SOSConcern I’d like to do a double major in neuroscience/psychology and history.
Just make sure when you get in college, to protect your GPA if you want to go on to med school, etc.
The big merit schools - UA would fit what you are looking for, but you may obtain something with your in-state CA options.
The application for UA is easy/quick - just need to get things in for scholarship deadline. There is lots of CC information that could be helpful to you.
Oh gosh…I used to say that in frustration to my son. Until it was pointed out to me that he heard it “for real”, like you. So I stopped pushing that button. It is possible they aren’t serious either.
Talk to mom and dad and make a deal. Show them where you can go with your $ alone. Show them how little you can borrow. And then just be nice. Honestly, that’s all I want from my son. Just be nice and do your chores!!! You’d be amazed how a little will get you a long way!
I would apply to UA , application cost is low and no essays are required. At least your tuition would be covered by scholarship and it would show your parents you are serious. After you are admitted you can apply for scholarships. That way you have a true safety regardless of your parental situation - you would be able to afford it on your own with loans and a job. You can then decide if that alternative is better than commuting to a CC.
Since you live in CA , CC is also an extremely good option. I’ve had lots of friends who took that route and finished at UCLA or Cal because it was cheaper.
My son applied to UA in September and it only took about 1 mo to hear back. Whatever you do, continue to work on your essays for the other colleges, the EA deadline for most is this weekend.
Full tuition scholarships like at UA may not be enough, since the remaining cost is often $12,000 to $15,000, which is quite a stretch for a student to self-fund through work earnings (and federal direct loans if the parents are willing to fill in the FAFSA).
But the OP’s stats would qualify for some automatic full ride scholarships at other schools, so that the remaining cost would be much smaller and more possible to cover through work earnings.
However, if the parents still refuse to pay, then the OP may not be able to afford any four year schools to transfer to after two years of CC. Also, that would mean living at home, which may not be ideal if the OP and parents are drama-prone even if the parents are willing to continue subsidizing the OP living at home.
The full tuition to Bama may not be enough, but it still sends a message to the parents that the DD might have options.
I think that if she keeps her nose clean, gets some big merit awards elsewhere, her parents will fund a Calif school.
The ED option is likely out the door, but she’ll still likely have options if she can get on their good side.
I can understand why some parents act this way at this point. Their child is nearing 18…this is the last chance for some parents to have some impact on wayward kids. The OP admits to some “bad behavior”. Mom knows that she only has a few months left to wield some power. She’s hoping for some positive outcome.
I’d just like to thank everyone for their input and help in this matter. My parents and I have discussed college and they will be allowing me to apply ED and EA but I will also be applying to some other schools that weren’t on my list where I can get some sort of merit aid for. I have a lot of work ahead of me to show my parents that I have the maturity and ability to do well in college, but I’m just going to take it one step at a time. Thank you again everyone!
good luck!!! You can do it!!!
You mention ED and EA and schools with Merit Aid.
But you KNOW that if you’re accepted to your ED school, you’ve made a commitment to attend there, right???
