Parent refuses to fill out non-custodial waivers

@bschooltotech I agree. I totally understand each school is different and we very well may not get a waiver at any or all of them. But based on my research, I decided it was worth a shot. I have seen others get waivers even with CS. We do have two FAFSA-only schools and some merit options as well, just in case. Plus her schools are pretty selective so she may not even get in, and we won’t have to worry about a waiver anyways. LoL.

Are you the one with the sister who got little/no aid because of no NCP info

Some colleges do require the custodial parent’s signature on the waiver and some don’t. But some don’t even have a waiver form, they just ask for the third-party letters. It varies. Hopefully the OP is able to submit some waivers without her mom’s assistance.

The differences in what schools require may be why the mom thinks that the student doesn’t know what he/she is talking about.

Circling back to the OP, the the fact remains that the OP’s mom is omitting child support payments from the the documents submitted. Not being truthful is a risk that can have serious consequences. Don’t know the odds of this “omission” being caught (would it show up on mom’s tax forms or are payments under the table?) but the OP’s mom appears to be willing to take the chance.

@JustGraduate That is true, although the OP never stated her mom didn’t put the CS on the documents submitted, it does seem like that might be the case given what was said. Child support isn’t listed on federal tax returns as it is not taxable income, but I certainly wouldn’t take a chance of omitting that information and being caught, especially given the potential consequences.

The admission was made in this thread:

@BelknapPoint Oh ok I didn’t see that one. I sure hope she changes that as I would hate for this student to not get any aid at all due to that.

also she omitted the child support payments on the FAFSA

This poor student is in a pickle.

If this is the same student whose older sister got no aid after the mom included CS, I wonder if the mom know thinks that by excluding CS she can create the scenario of no-contact, and schools will accept the waiver

I hope he/she has affordable schools.

The county department of social services or the state department that collects child support payments (not the DA, who has nothing to do with civil divorce or child support enforcement) is not a messenger service and cannot/will not ‘pass a message along’ to a non-custodial parent. Most ‘contact’ between the county and the payer is through payroll deductions or bank garnishments. The custodial parent has no right to know where the NCP works or lives. The county is only concerned with whether the payments are being made. Think about it from the other side. What if the NCP parent wanted to contact the CP but there was a court order of protection? Do you think the county should just pass along the contact information?

You think the university is going to send a message through the DA to an unknown NCP?

This would never happen.

This student’s BIGGEST concern is the omission of the child support from her fafsa and Profile forms. If she gets need based aid without that money indicated on her profile…she will. W getting need based aid fraudulently.

Big issue.

Can you involve a trusted family friend, clergy member or school guidance counselor to intervene with your mom on your behalf? So sorry!
