Parent Weekend

Parent Weekend was a fantastic celebration of all KP and our children are trying very hard to achieve. Beat Retreat was a wonderful example of some of the accomplishments that are commonplace at KP. BR was inspiring, touching and unabashedly patriotic. Even though O'Hara was extremely hot, I would bet every person there had goosebumps during the presentation. How refreshing to be with people who are not afraid to show how much we have to be grateful for as Americans. I hope all parents and alum do whatever necessary to help continue the KP tradition.

AS a 2012 dad I am so much more impressed with KP, the upperclassmen and of course our new Plebe's and what they are accomplishing for America. Beat Retreat was wonderful! But somebody needs to call the AC companies and get some installed before next year! I'm surprised that no one passed out! I thought I would! Overall I wouldn't miss this weekend for anything!

Chief..was great to meet you at PW....regarding the AC.....how about we get 2nd Co and Band A/C before we worry about Ohara. My son had a difficult time studying for final exams third trimester last year because of no A/C in his room. :D

HI,
PW was a fun weekend meeting everyone. I did hear that A/C is needed in Murphy. Didn't hear about the others. Yes they all need it. B.R. is only once a year. I'll bet basketball in the winter is chilly there.
GO KP!

That was one of the best weekends I've had in a long time. Everyone was so friendly and upbeat despite the weather. Thanks to all involved for making it so memorable!

Only problem I had was not enough time to talk, or see everything we would have liked to. Heck we even didn't have a stoppage across Manhatten or on the Throgs Neck. It was almost like they cleared the roads for us. USMMA is a great place and we are looking forward to learning even more about it in the coming years.

Now that I have had a night to sleep I am fully recovered!

Oh good, I am SO glad all the parents had a great time, but this thread is USELESS without pictures!

Hope you enjoy these pictures. Beat Retreat was hard to photograph due to the dim lights and the spot lights opposite us.

Sorry, let's try pictures again.

Yes, indeed, didn't we all have a wonderful time at the Parents' Weekend! Great students and great families. The humidity and heat were really something, though, and my heart went out to all the performers at the Beating Retreat...especially the Great Neck Bagpipers in their uniforms. I didn't even think I would make it through, just sitting in the audience! My problem, though, and I would like to get other opinions on this is.......What is the Academy's policy on handling situations where heat exhaustion and possibly heat stroke are likely? There at the Acceptance Ceremony at Tomb Field with temperatures in the upper 80s and pre-storm humidity of 95%, were the students standing on "astro turf" for a very long period of time. When the sun came out behind the clouds the effects of the heat on the students became apparent (two aid cars left with heat exhaustion victims) This looked like a liability for the school and know it made many parents in the audience uncomfortable. I would venture to guess that not many of the students heard much of the last speech. Had the speaker gone on another 10 minutes, I would not doubt that other ambulances would have to be called. So, I guess I am wondering if anyone knows what preventative measures are taken by the school, especially on Saturday, when students are put into extreme conditions like this for ceremony or athletics or regimental training. And, when something like this starts happening, what do they do about it? (ie change format of program, or call a break or??????????

Don't lock your knees!

(same result at Parris Island Marine Corp Recruitment Center at an August graduation, on the asphalt of the parade deck)... Except 1 of the 5 who fell out was a Drill Instructor...Face first, on the edge of that hat they wear.... KLANGGG. (thought the brim was made of aluminum... maybe it was the sword he was wearing).

Zonker is probably right, most people standing at attention for long periods of time pass out because they locked their knees while standing. Don't plan on changing the Acceptance Day ceremony any time soon.

It's called IN THE MILITARY! You deal with it. They have paramedics on duty to make sure everyone is taken care of. When the mids are in an engine room on a ship and the temps exceed 100, what are they going to do....stop the ship and call for a break?

True enough...good answers. On a different topic, is there a retirement acknowlegement for Vice Admiral Stewart that parents can contribute to?

People have passed out at attention since the roman empire. You re-hydrate them and carry on. It's not sun stoke. No need call the lawyers or for parents to get excited and storm the admirals office.

Here are the first set of pictures from our visit to KP and Parents weekend.

As far as the Academy's "policy" on outdoor activities in extreme heat, there really isn't one, at least that I know of (except for the whole "black flag" thing during indoc). I can't necessarily speak for everyone, but in my four years here, I have never come close to passing out during any parade or regimental function (at least, from the heat - from boredom, my mind is gone in 20 seconds).

I can also say that the people who do pass out (without naming certain names), tend to be the same ones who pass out MULTIPLE times. It certainly isn't a direct reflection on the severity of the conditions out there. Perhaps they just don't "prepare" correctly. Just be well-hydrated and DO NOT LOCK YOUR KNEES!!!

Chiefnerdnc:

Your pictures are awesome! I did not take as many as you did and I agree Saturday was amazing as well as Friday (except for the deluge in the afternoon). Looks like your son is enjoying KP as much as my daughter is.
Parent's Weekend Rocked!

IT took me a couple of days but here are pictures from all 3 days of Parents Weekend.

I don't know what I'm going to do this coming weekend....I hope the football game is on the internet!

You did a great job on the photos! Thanks for sharing them with us.
