ok so my parents want me to go to ivies (like every other parent) and honestly, if i really put my mind to it, i probably (hopefully) can score acceptance into one or two. but heres the thing : i dont want to. why? location location location.

most of them are in the northeast. columbia used to be my dream school but after living in new york for 12 years (lived in nigeria till i was 4) , the thought of going to college in the same state is really nauseating. i dont want to go to ANY college in the northeast because i hate cold weather so that crosses out harvard, yale, brown, princeton, (wasnt planning on those either way), columbia, cornell and dartmouth (not really sure where that is).

i really want to go to stanford or ucla or berkeley but theyve already said a big N-O to cali (too far). im thinking of georgetown or gwu or emory but they say that those arent ivies.
any advice on how to change their views? ( or how to get them to say yes to cali? :D :D )

Show them that Stanford is as prestigious and excellent as Harvard. Georgetown is comparable with several Ivy League schools (and the best overall in certain things, like it’s unmatched School of Foreign Service).

i’ve actually started working on that with my dad and he’s thinking about it but my mom is a VERY tough lady. i just dont want to go to an ivy in the northeast and be miserable all through the winter and fall.

I’d just like to start by saying not all parents want their kids to go to Ivies; some recognize the pretentiousness, grade inflation, and similar worth you can find in other schools.

Anyway, BillyMc is right. Stanford is just as prestigious as the Ivies. It doesn’t sound like your parents will be convinced by much, so I recommend reports by respected newspapers/journals that show them you’re right.

OtherWindow: EXACTLY !!! i’ve always been infatuated with california and i love the year-round heat and lack of snow but they want me to be within a 4-5 hour driving distance and cali is about a 6 hour flight !
i mean if i get accepted to stanford im going no matter what, but i just dont want my parents to think that their opinions dont matter to me.

Does it REALLY matter what your parents want? You are the one going to the school. What would happen if you put your foot down and insisted to go where you want to go?

I am having this same problem. I, however, am trying to get to the Northeast instead of leave it. My parents are currently saying that they would not pay for Yale if I picked it over Notre Dame. I have visited Yale once, I absolutely loved it but my parents both hated it. I have been trying to convince them for months that I would like to go to Yale but they don’t want to hear it. Everything I say, no matter how convincing or true they won’t listen to me.

I guess I am trying to say that I understand exactly where you are coming from and I wish you the best. Unfortunately, I have no advice for you because my discussions have not helped me at all.

Can I ask why? Notre Dame is certainly an excellent university, but Yale is obviously excellent as well. Why would they so restrict you? They want you close to home, or it’s a parent’s alma mater?

umm…I really hate when choose a school just be/c its an ivy…
there are many other great schools out there that are comparable and even better than most ivies.
stanford is better than more than half the ivies.
johns hopkins is stronger in many areas than half the ivies.
georgetown SFS is the top of the top in its field.

BillyMc: they can afford a ton of visits to Georgetown but probably only visit Cali like twice a year. :(

qdawg2011: yes actually my mom would probably refuse to pay ( which is why im looking for scholarships like crazy )

quite frankly i think the ivy this just a label.
but also, why dont they make those other schools (JHU, Georgetown, Stanford) ivies? like is there only a certain number of schools that can be ivies? or is it based on acceptance rates ?

adababy845 - he meant that you shld visit the college campuses and then decide. Sometimes a campus visit can change everything. I was Columbia and Cornell crazy all my life. I visited the campuses (mind you i Live in Dubai so the trip was VERY expensive) and fell out of love straight away. In stead i picked penn and thats where I am going next fall. The problem was that my father had pressured me for Columbia all my life, when he saw the campuses and compared the two he encouraged me to ED to penn.

Take your mom with you for the visits. I am sure Stanford’s uber sexy campus will change her mind in a split second.
Hope this helped.
