Right now, my parents are forcing me to apply ED to NYU Stern, which is my 3rd choice. My top choices are UCLA and UC Berkeley. The thing is, the only reason my parents want me to apply ED is because they think that I'll have a better chance getting into NYU ED than UCB or UCLA. When I told them that I MIGHT not enjoy NYU (I probably will based on what I've heard, but I haven't visited the campus yet), they said that it doesn't matter and that the only thing that matters is that I get into a good school.

Even worse, I have been spending the past month or so on my UC essays (which IMO are pretty good so far), and I haven't even started my NYU essays or polished them up yet. I also haven't even given my teachers the correct forms for recommendation letters, because I wasn't planning on applying ED (which means that my earliest deadline was Jan 1), and they're probably going to be ****ed because of such short notice. I have only 2 weeks to get EVERYTHING together for NYU, and I don't think I can handle it.

What should I do? Are there any compelling arguments AGAINST applying ED, that I can use to convince my parents? Because they are putting a lot of pressure on me to apply ED and I don't think I can handle it.

BTW, based on my stats, would your opinions change? Are my chances at NYU Stern way better than my chances at the 2 UCs?

GPA: 3.4 UW 4.0 UC weighted (upward trend)
SAT: 2220/1470 (retook this oct most likely got 2250+)
SAT II: 800 chem 800 math iic
AP: Straight 5s on chem, bio, english lang&comp, calc ab, music theory
Sr sched: AP Calc BC, AP Econ, AP Stat, AP Lit
ECs should be above average for UCLA, UCB, and NYU

Absolutely. NYU Stern does not give financial aid really, like, if you get anything non loan based, you are LUCKY. Your parents will likely end up denying NYU Stern ED package because the cost of attendance is 60k/year, with bad Finaid.

Other reasons are high cost of living in NYC, and hell - it’s your life. You don’t need to apply. Tell them how you feel. NYU Stern is as competitive as those other schools. If you really have a good chance at Stern, apply to your top school - its not like you have zero chance at them, and ED will help. Rushing on an ED app wil lower your chances, the essays are critical.
Good luck.

Tell them it’s too late to spring this on you, because it is. It’s not fair to your teachers and GC either - at our HS kids had to tell the guidance office by 9/30 of all ED apps and due dates.

Well, if you write a bad essay, throw in a bunch of garbage, I am sure NYU won’t accept you. That’s your solution. Seriously, did you ask your parents if they are willing to pay whatever NYU asks of your family? I don’t know the actual COA, but $60+K/year is about right. Can they pay all that?

I told my parents that if I applied early decision and got in than I would never be satisfied. I would never know if I could have gotten into my other choices. They’re your parents. if you really do not want to apply early decision and it bothers you that much, than just tell them. I am sure they’ll back off.

Trust about everyone on this form dont put yourself through 60k a year. If I were in your position and NYU really was my 3rd choice and I didn’t think I’d enjoy it. I’d copy and paste an essay off the internet for one (surprisingly some kids actually got admitted for doing that) and two tell my parents that NYU isnt worth the money, because honestly its not, maybe slightly for business but as far as I’m concerned you are just paying for the name (which is sinking in ranking internationally and I’m pretty sure they are as well nationally).

Thanks everyone for the replies. I tried using some of the arguments listed above, but they’re still not listening. All they care about is that I get into a good, high-ranked school. To them, it doesn’t matter how much I enjoy it or not.

Does it matter how much they can pay? NYU is known for being expensive and has a reputation for poor financial aid. If you are a California resident, then Berkeley and UCLA will likely be much less expensive.

Of course, it should be easy to get rejected by NYU by writing a bad essay or asking to be rejected in the essay.

Your other posts mention that you’re OOS for the UCs, and that you’re interested in business. NYU seems like a better fit for you, but that’s your call. It’s true that you could scuttle your ED application by writing a lousy essay, but that would also mean an ED rejection with no chance to reconsider things in the Spring come the RD round. It’s in your interest to keep NYU as an option, which means waiting for RD so that you can write the best possible essay and craft the best application possible. You want teachers and your counselor to write recommendations when they’re feeling generous towards you, not when they’re feeling resentful for your lack of planning. Submitting a haphazard ED application is not going to give you an admissions tip. Better to take your time, go visit the school, and then write enthusiastically about it in your RD essay.

You say that your parents are able to foot the bill for any school. Make sure that they have explicitly said that they can afford $55k+ a year for four years, not just that they can afford “anything”.

No student should apply ED to a school they’ve never visited. End of story. Your parents should be interested in you graduating from a highly ranked college, not just matriculating to one.

Hey I believe you can totally do it! I had a similar situation as you, high standardized test scores and very good APs with a lower than average GPA due to my high school’s rigorous curriculum. My parents forced me to apply ED to Cornell and I got differed. I WAS SO HAPPY. You have no idea. I applied to the UCs and now I’m going to UC Berkeley. If you believe you’re better than NYU and your parents are forcing you, DONT DO IT. I literally just typed out a rough draft of an essay for Cornell because I didn’t want to go, I spent no time, no effort, just did what my parents said because they wouldn’t understand that I would hate it there. I followed my heart and now I’m in my dream school and loving it. Don’t throw it away for NYU. Feel free to msg me (:

Tell your parents that ED is binding, meaning that you won’t have until May 1 to make your final decision. Therefore, you won’t have the opportunity to compare financial aid.

Thanks everyone for applying. First of all, I said my recs are due Jan 1 because the UCs don’t require them. Also, it’s not like I don’t want to go to NYU – I’ll be more than happy if I get in. Its just that I’m not 100% set on going there. Plus I think I’ll have a better chance RD because my senior grades will probably be a 3.8+, and my essays and recs will probably be better too.

If you are interested at all in Stern-NYU, tanking the essay cannot be a good idea.

Speaking as a parent – here’s my recommendation. Explain the situation to your guidance counselor and then try to set up a meeting with the GC, your parents and yourself. If the GC explains to your parents that this course of action is not in your best interest, you may have a better shot at things.
